2C Daily News – Saturday, August 18, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Solid Ground on Sunday Neighborhood Full Gospel Church, 901 South St., in Corning invites the public to come see Solid Ground at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19. Solid Ground is a men's trio, made up of Jeff Johnson, Seth Weiss and Randy Wold, from Sacramento who shares the Gospel of Jesus Christ through traditional and contem- porary Southern Gospel music with a lost and hurting world in venues of all sizes. 'Leaving in sorrow,' Catholics start new church HICKORY, N.C (MCT) — The first reading comes from the Book of Kings, with an angel nudging an exhausted and distraught Elijah, telling him to get up and leave. The Rev. Tom Sanford and his congregation have done just that. Sanford left the Catholic priesthood more than a quarter century ago. But now he's back behind the altar. He's pastor of a new spiritual community, born out of his frustration with what he believes is the philosophical backsliding of the Catholic Church. Three weeks in Israel III Sanford started Blessed John XXIII Ecumenical Church around Easter, and he's starting small. When he walks down the aisle to "We Gather Together," three worshippers stand and sing along. Yet Sanford and his flock say there's a larger point beyond their small numbers: They have left the Catholic Church to become better Catholics. While millions of followers of the worldwide church vig- orously debate Vatican positions on birth control, women, liturgy and the balance of priest-lay authority, the members of the Pope John Church have taken the added step of break- ing with Catholic leaders. "This is a pretty grave act, setting yourself apart from the rest of the Catholic community," says the Rev. James Mar- tin, author of "The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything." Plenty of Catholics disagree with church teachings, he weeks volunteering in what is called the Sar-El program – a voluntary and non-governmental program that recruits people from all over the world to spend from one to three weeks on a military base – as the civilians we are – to live and work alongside Israeli sol- diers. We do chores for the soldiers so that they are freed to do more impor- tant things. More importantly, we get to know what it means to be an Israeli in today's world. We learn how to know and love Israelis without romanticizing them on the one hand or marginalizing them, on the other. We eat, sleep and shower in their facilities. We play soc- cer or just visit with them in our off time. My two weeks on the base of three weeks in the country will remain one of the most treasured experiences of my life. We took one day off work to make During my stay in Israel I spent two in a collective atmosphere. Eventually it was discovered that this horribly damaged the children and the practice was abandoned decades ago. But all was not lost of the early experiments; the best drug rehab programs and some prisoner rehabs are run like the old style kibbutzim. says, "but they don't leave." Sanford says he couldn't stay. He believes church tradi- tionalists are trying to undermine 50 years of church reforms set in motion by the worldwide councils known as Vatican I and Vatican II. The final straw came early this year: the church's decision to reinstate the original 1963 English translation of the Mass. Supporters say the wording better reflects the beauty of the traditional Latin liturgy. Critics call it clunky. More impor- tant, Sanford believes, it springs from a philosophical retrenchment, "and I couldn't abide by it." So in March he ran a notice in area newspapers announc- ing a new ecumenical house of faith that would use the pre- vious post-Vatican II liturgy for its Catholic Mass. Right around Easter, the church opened in the chapel of Jenkins Funeral Home in Newton, N.C. Sanford, after a month of cramming, performed his first public mass in 28 years. Thirteen worshippers attended. "I had one more than Jesus did for the Last Supper," he says. No, says the Diocese of Charlotte, which serves 500,000 Catholics in western North Carolina. But is this really a Mass? Under church rules, Sanford, who left the priesthood in 1984 to marry, cannot perform the Mass, says David Hains, a spokesman for the diocese. To do so publicly, after giving up his priestly duties, Hains said, is "a grave error." It is also sinful for Catholics who "knowingly go to a Mass that's celebrated by someone who doesn't have the authority," Hains says. Nor would that worship fulfill the Sunday obligation for attending Mass. a field trip to the town of Zichron Ya'a- cov. The name means "in memory of Jacob" and the Jacob in question was the father of Baron Edmond DeRothshild. The baron used his fami- ly money to found some forty-five set- tlement colonies in what was then called Palestine, beginning with the first wave of Jewish immigration in 1880. It took fifty years of blood, sweat, and death to make the town what it is today – a garden spot in every sense. But the Jews had their backs so to the wall that there was no alternative. They hung in there. We visited a kibbutz and learned of the way people lived there once and how they live there today. All the kib- butzim began as experiments in social- ism but nearly all are private enterprise today. In the beginning the children were taken from their homes and raised FIRST (MCT) WORSHIP GOD The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Bap- tist Church, Kansas City, Kansas: Religion is hard to define, and therein is the problem. Man sees religion in many different ways and cultures. As Christians we see the mandates of the Bible as the source of our practice and worship. It teaches that the right rela- tionship with God is redemptive. It teaches that the right relationship with our fellow man is beneficial. Each evening the volun- teer group would gather for an educational/entertain- ment opportunity. After- ward we hung out with each other and any passing soldiers until we drifted off to our bunks. This evening we were divided into two teams and tasked with designing a kibbutz – including rules, areas of emphasis such as what agricultural products we aimed to produce, and a vision for our com- munity. My team knew that strawber- ries were well suited to the soil and cli- mate of much of Israel. Tut is the Hebrew for strawberry and we decided we would form a kibbutz that grew and sold strawberries, strawberry ice cream, strawberry yogurt, and anything else that fit the theme. Our golf carts and bikes for use on the kibbutz would be strawberry red and our logo would be a ripe red strawberry. and its field trip gave rise to the most enjoyable group activity of my time in Sar- El. And the day name? You guessed it – we would be the tutti kibbuti. And the be asked to raise the Israeli flag on my first morning on the base. The greatest privilege was celebrating the Lord's Supper on the banks of the Jordan The greatest honor I received was to It teaches that the right rela- tionship with nature is rewarding. We spend a life- time trying to make it bal- ance. We should spend all of our time making those relationships work. When we view the "feel good" side, we are looking for a self-satisfying experi- ence. What the Bible teach- es is that the worship of God should be predominating in the life of an individual. Many examples from the Bible teach us that God desires our life to reflect good moral standards. God wants man to see him as the James Wilson GodTalk River about a hundred yards from where Jesus Himself was baptized. The greatest surprise was visiting the Old City of Jerusalem and seeing sights like the Citadel of David on a blistering hot Judean day only to find in the garden in the middle of the church compound across the street where cool breezes blew no matter how hot it was outside the compound – or perhaps the peace that believ- ers and pre-believers alike feel in the Church in which Mary received word that she would bear the Christ Child. The greatest moment, howev- er, was being overwhelmed and undone by the loving presence of God Himself as I laid my hands on the western wall of the temple of Yahweh. There is no preparing for it. Anyone interested in volunteering for Sar-El need only go to www.vfi.org and read the materials, download the application, and begin to contact the coordinators listed on the web site for your region. There is a process of appli- cation to ensure that no one with an agenda is attempting to pursue it in Israel. But for those who complete the process and spend a term in this land of God's firstborn I have to say, "You are in for the experience of a lifetime!" My first hope was to go; my next is to return. The Rev. James Wilson recently spent three weeks ministering in Israel. Voices of Faith: Religion isn't meant to be all 'feel good,' is it? one who provides and grants privileges. We are drawn to God and we wor- ship him. We should look for more than just feeling good. We should be informed and instructed in life. We should be warned of the consequences of our choices. We can live better lives as we become com- mitted to the ways of his word. The first category, known as hedonistic plea- sures, is the one we are most familiar with, such as mate- rial possessions, money, cars or even a beautiful day. In today's age of pervasive media, we are constantly bombarded by messages that tell us we will be happy only if we have the latest gadget. There is nothing wrong with hedonistic plea- sure, as long as we recog- nize that they are imperma- nent and will not last.
