There is no financial hit. The TV deals are safe and no team is going to sell one fewer ticket or replica jersey if a replacement referee — whose resume highlights just may include the Lingerie Foot- ball League — happens to blow a call or refers to Atlanta as "Arizona." There is no reason to hide from any of that, because even NFL vice president Ray Anderson, a former Falcons execu- tive, shoved that reality up front in a phone conversa- tion Friday: "We've offered raises of 5 to 11 percent. Just because the owners can afford to pay more doesn't mean you do it. You've never paid for an NFL ticket to watch somebody officiate a game. Nobody has ever paid to watch me be the league supervisor for a game." He is right, of course. The problem is that the NFL season begins in less than three weeks and there has been disturbing foreshadowing that sug- gests the referees may be pionship, third round, at Greensboro, N.C. MLB • 12:30 p.m. FOX — Regional coverage, 1B Weekend August 18-19, 2012 MLB Cabrera ban just another blemish on game By TIM COWLISHAW McClatchy Tribune You can feel a little bit sorry for the American League team that opens the World Series on the road. You can feel sorrier for the Arizona Diamond- backs. Mostly, you should feel (pick one) pity or shame for the game of baseball that cannot shake the performance-enhanc- ing drug curse even when it tries. But you can't feel sorry for outfielder Melky Cabrera, who just screwed up a multi-million dollar payday this off-season by getting suspended for 50 games following a failed drug test. Cabrera was a guy who, though mostly an everyday player for six years with the Yankees and Atlanta, struggled to make a name for himself before a breakout 2011 season in Kansas City. That earned him a one- year $6 million deal with San Francisco and it appeared he was bound for much, much more. A hot first half in 2012 earned him an All-Star Game start where he car- ried home MVP honors – and home-field advantage for the N.L. – in large part due to a two-run home run off the Rangers' Matt Har- rison. At least Harrison, the Rangers' best pitcher this season, can feel better about his All-Star inning, knowing that much of the damage was done by a performance-enhancing drug user. As for not feeling too much sorrow for the A.L. team that opens the World Series on the road, bear in mind that, while Cabrera had a first-inning single, Justin Verlander gave up five first-inning runs. With or without Cabrera's bat, the N.L. was tearing up Verlander on this par- ticular night. But it does call into question, once again, the stupidity of awarding the winner anything of signif- icance that in no way relates to the All-Star game itself. MCT file photo With the season three weeks away, the officials may be thrust into the spotlight. the "entertainment." Two weeks into the exhibition season, we've seen a New York Giants punt returner called for holding (now that's tal- ent); a punt ruled a touch- back even though it was clearly downed on the 4- yard-line; a phantom face- mask penalty against the Falcons' Jonathan Babineaux (the official was the play); Atlanta being referred to as "Ari- zona" by a referee multi- ple times; a referee calling out the wrong winner of the coin flip before the Hall of Fame game; play- Boston at N.Y.Yankees or Pittsburgh at St. Louis • 4 p.m. MLB — Regional coverage, L.A. There almost certainly has been more. But that's enough to paint a picture. Most Falcons players wouldn't bite on officiat- ing questions, fearing they would be fined. But cornerback Dunta Robin- son said after Thursday's game, "I'm trying to take the good out of it and say: It's preseason for them also. Some calls didn't look like fouls to me. He said "there have been no more mistakes in the preseason" than there would be with regular officials, adding, "They're just being highlighted because of the situation." Look at it this way. There's nothing base- ball can do about cheaters other than to punish them after the fact when they get caught. Cabrera has been killing Arizona this season.
