He also brought home silver medals in the 100 IM and the 100 free. In the 50 free, Rider placed fourth and in the 50 breaststroke he finished seventh. Rider's sister, Hero, took right after Six Sun Oaks Aquatics Racing swimmers made a haul on medals and high point awards at the North Valley Aquatic Championships held at the Redding Aquatic Center over the weekend. OLYMPICS | GYMNASTICS Women pick up men's slack Two Olympic gold medals are just fine with Gabby Douglas. Same for Aly Raisman, though that bronze was pretty sweet, too. LONDON (AP) — While the all-around champion failed to add to her medal haul Tues- day, Raisman wrapped up the London Olympics in style. Her gold on floor exercise was the first for a U.S. woman, and her bronze on balance beam was a bit of karmic payback. Douglas may have her brother by winning the 6-Under Seasonal High Point Award. She won gold in the 100 free, the 50 free, and the 25 fly. Hero rounded out her medal haul with a third-place finish in the 25 free, fourth in the 25 back, and fifth in the 25 breast. Hero's twin sister Lula Rider was awarded a fifth place 6- Under Seasonal High Point Trophy after she won the 25 free, placed third in the the 50 free and the 25 back, and fourth in the 100 free. SWIMMING Tehama's top talents land in Colorado By DN staff won the most presti- gious gymnastics title — all-around champion — but Raisman leaves as the most decorated of the Fierce Five with three medals. "To say that I even almost had four medals, that makes me even more happy," the U.S. captain said, referring to an earlier tiebreak that snatched away a bronze. "It definitely went better than I thought it would." Good thing, too, because the American medal count needed a boost. The six U.S. medals are the fewest since 2000, and the men were a bust. After all the big talk about challeng- ing China and Japan for the team gold, Danell Leyva's all-around bronze was their only medal. On the heels of com- peting at the Far West- ern Championships in San Jose last week, three Tehama County swimmers are in Col- orado for the Western Zone Championships. Jaxon Balken, 10, Julia Brandt, 12, and Jayne Brandt,10, repre- sented Sun Oaks Aquat- ic Racing at Far West- erns where more than 1,200 swimmers from the U.S., Canada and Mexico competed. Julia was a part of the first SOAR relay team to place at Far Western. Her team finished eighth in the 200-meter freestyle relay and sev- enth in the 200-meter individual medley relay. Now the trio of swimmers are in Grand Junction, Colo. as part of the Sierra Nevada Zone Team to swim at the Western Zone Championships. There are four zones, and swimmers must qualify to compete in the championships. Balken qualified to MCT photo Alexandra Raisman during her routine in the women's floor exercise Tuesday. But the three golds — team, all-around and vault — are the most for the U.S. since the boy- cotted games of 1984, and the women got the prizes that really matter: their first team tile since the Magnificent Seven in 1996, and a third straight all-around champion. "We want to seal the deal that we're the best team that's ever hap- pened," Walsh Jennings said Tuesday night after they advanced to their third consecutive Olympic gold medal game with a 22-20, 22- 20 victory over China. "I'm so happy, going home with two Olympic gold medals and a couple of titles under my belt. I'm so happy for Aly. She deserves to be up on that podium." Not so happy was Jordyn Wieber, who leaves without a single individual medal after finishing seventh on floor exercise. The Olympics have been one bummer after another for the world champion. She arrived as the favorite to amass the most medals, but failed to even qualify for the all-around. Now she's got six weeks in a walking boot to look forward to with what is believed to be a stress fracture in her right leg. "It's a little bit of dis- appointment overall," Wieber said. "But at the same time, leaving with a gold medal is more than I could ask for, and it's so cool to be a part of that team."
