ByPatriciaMartin Whenasuddenwind and rain storm catches us unawares, and there is a shelter near-by, most of us quickly head for cover. Maybe it's an awning ex- tending from a building or, even better, a building that we can step into. Who wants to remain outside, especially when the rain becomes hail, and the wind beats against our bodies? I've experienced the feeling of security, safety and warmth of being in my home, be it ever so humble, during an intense storm. The added touch of food cooking on the stove, the warmth of a fireplace, or hot brewing coffee with that special aroma, seems to permeate the at- mosphere with a sense of peace. While the storm re- mains outside, the tran- quility and peace tran- scends the fear I might be feeling if I were left alone in the midst of the storm. I recall a rather stormy experience that occurred many years ago. One win- ter evening, after a busy day at work, I decided to attend a Bible study in a nearby community. My two small sons and I left just before dark, and while traveling, my car suddenly slid off the road and into a field of mud. Several days of rainfall had caused the soil to be very soft, and my car sank deeply into the mire. There we were, stuck in the mud, out in the country, with no build- ings around other than a roadside bar. We were frightened and felt alone. We prayed that the Lord would send help. Within five minutes two kind gen- tlemen appeared. They un- hooked a boat from their truck, and hooked my car up to their vehicle, pull- ing it out of the mud with chains. With happy smiles, and many thanks to these two "angels" we waved as they drove off. Once again, as a young single mother, my heart was warmed by the faith- fulness of God's keeping power. Embers of love and peace ruled within my heart. My little sons were able to snuggle down, feel- ing safe again, by experi- encing the hand of God meeting a small family's need for help. As we continued trav- eling, this time turning around to go home, I mar- veled at the speed of God's quick intervention, and I was forever reminded of His loving care for us. Jesus has promised that we are never alone. He said, "… I will never leave you, nor forsake you" (He- brews 13:5). We can also depend upon the promises found in Psalm 91, espe- cially in verse one — "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." When I'm dwelling close with God, and running to Him alone for my shel- ter, I'm able to bask in the peace of God. The storms of life cannot rob me of that solid peace, offered through my Rock Christ Jesus. Even though we are liv- ing during a time when storms appear quickly, we are not caught unawares. None of us see any value in standing out in the storms of life, when we can come under the safe shelter, Al- mighty God provides! Like the person experienc- ing the peace within their home, (shelter) we can smell the aroma of the Lily of the Valley, and the Rose of Sharon. (See Song of Solomon 2:1) Our souls are warmed by the fire of the Holy Spirit. What's cooking on the burner of every human life, if we will have it, and feeds us with manna from heaven — the Word of God. So therefore, mem- bers of the body of Christ, we are safe and secure, whenever we choose to dwell within the shelter of the arms of God. I'm not opening the door and plac- ing myself into the rav- age of the storm, when I can remain under the shel- ter of the Almighty. Where will each of us decide to stand? Come close to the lover of your soul, your Je- sus and mine. Lord, we desire to re- main under Your shadow of shelter and safety. Hold us close, in the hollow of Your hand. Amen. PAUL Lutheran Church to hold fun day By Frances D'emilio The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Pope Fran- cis has lamented that chil- dren are being taught at school that gender can be a choice, adding that his predecessor, Benedict XVI has labeled current times "the epoch of sin against God the Creator." Francis weighed in with his view on gender and what he said was that of the emeritus pontiff while meeting privately last week with bishops from Poland during his pilgrim- age there. The Vatican re- leased a transcript Tues- day of those closed-door remarks. The pope said he wanted to conclude his remarks by reflecting on this: "We are living a moment of annihi- lation of man as image of God." Francis said: "Today, in schools they are teaching this to children — to chil- dren! — that everyone can choose their gender." Without specifying, he blamed this on textbooks supplied by "persons and institutions who donate money." The pope blamed what he called "ideologi- cal colonizing" backed by "very influential countries" which he didn't identify, adding "this is terrible." One such "colonization" he said — "I'll say it clearly with its first and last name — is gender." The "colonization" theme is one he has railed against before, including during an Asian pilgrimage in 2015. This time, though, he volunteered that he has discussed the gender issue with Benedict, who has lived at the Vatican since retiring in 2013. "Speaking with Pope Benedict, who is well, and has a clear mind, he was telling me: 'Holiness, this is the epoch of sin against God the Creator.' He's in- telligent! God created man and woman, God created the world this way, this way, this way, and we are doing the opposite," Fran- cis told the Polish bishops Wednesday shortly after his arrival in Krakow at the start of a five-day pil- grimage.
