Ontheair working hard for years to build a stronger relation- ship with the IOC, in part to be in better position to eventually bring the Sum- mer Games back to the United States for the first time since 1996. It helps explain why the USOC has been vocal about some parts of the anti-dop- ing mess of the past year — saying the system is broken — but unwilling to break ranks at the highest level, including the IOC's deci- sion about Russia. Chief of sport perfor- mance Alan Ashley said he's spent a lot of time in the athletes' village and hasn't heard a word about doping or Russia. "They're looking for- ward to the competition," Ashley said. "That's what I hear about." But Ashley hasn't spoken to all the athletes. "I believed the IOC was going to say, 'We don't want thisinourorganizationand we have to make a stand,"' said U.S. race walker John Nunn, who also serves on the U.S. track team's ath- letes' advisory committee. "And to turn around and just go, 'Hey, why don't you just go make a decision for each sport, I'm like, Are you for real? You really just copped out on this."' USOC FROM PAGE 1 not lost on Buescher. "It's funny for me," he said. "David Ragan has been a huge help for me my entire career. His whole family has. We've got to pass him now, try to out- run him. It's not going to just be him. There's going to be a handful of them that we're going to have to outrun. It just so happens that one of them is the guy that mentored me through a lot of the early stages of my stock car career." The 23-year-old Bue- scher is the first Cup rookie to win a race since Joey Lo- gano at New Hampshire in 2009, and his first NAS- CAR victory came on a road course — at Mid-Ohio in 2014 in the second-tier Xfinity Series. Buescher posted two Xfinity victories last sea- son and won the series title. He's spending his rookie season in Cup as basically the fourth driver for Roush Fenway Racing because of a shared technical alliance between the organizations. Osborne said that relation- ship would give his shop everything it needs in the coming weeks as the team seeks a Chase spot. "I don't see anything to hold him back from get- ting into the top 30," said Ragan, who drives the No. 23 Toyota for BK Racing. "I'm certainly going to race hard. I don't want him to get there at my expense, but he's had speed of late. If he just had a little luck." With five races remain- ing before the Chase be- gins, 10 drivers have clinched spots in the 16-driver field: Brad Kesel- owski, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Kevin Har- vick, Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Logano, and Mar- tin Truex Jr. With one win, Tony Stewart also has all but claimed one of the re- maining spots. That Buescher is ready to join them is not a sur- prise back at the shop. The surprise is that he isn't in yet, and that's mainly be- cause of bad luck. He's finished 30th or worse 10 times this season, includ- ing the first three restric- tor plate races. NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 track, hit a home run, flied out to the warning track, lined out to left field, flied out to the warning track and hit a home run. Trea Turner connected for the first deep drive in the fifth inning, turning around a 1-1 fastball that tailed over the plate. Wil- son Ramos hit the other shot in the sixth, driving a 3-1 slider beyond the cen- ter-field fence. The home runs only tacked on to the Nation- als' earlier lead. They set up their pair of runs in the first inning on two ground ball singles up the mid- dle, the second of which shortstop Brandon Craw- ford gloved before sling- ing a wide throw to sec- ond base for an error that allowed Jayson Werth to take third. Daniel Murphy followed with a single and Ramos hit a sacrifice fly. The Nats increased their lead to 3-0 in the third in- ning after Turner doubled down the right-field line, advanced on a deep fly out and scored on Bryce Harp- er's sacrifice fly. The Giants could not keep up, aside from Angel Pagan's home run in the fourth inning. They man- aged just two hits in seven innings against left-hander Gio Gonzalez, and newly acquired closer Mark Mel- ancon shut the door in the ninth. It won't get easier. The Giants must attempt to rally back Saturday night against Stephen Stras- burg, who is 15-1 with a 2.69 ERA. Giants FROM PAGE 1 NICK WASS — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija allowed five runs in seven innings Friday against the Washington Nationals in Washington. jections of world cities and regions — Amsterdam, Florida, Shanghai, Dubai — being swamped by ris- ing seas. The peace symbol, tweaked into the shape of a tree, was projected onto the floor of the Maracana Stadium that filed with thousands of athletes from the 207 teams. "The heat is melting the icecap," a voice intoned. "It's disappearing very quickly." The crowd roared when Bundchen sashayed from one side of the 78,000-seat arena to the other, as Tom Jobim's grandson, Daniel, played his grandfather's famous song about the Ip- anema girl "tall and tan and young and lovely." In a video preceding the show, U.N. Secretary-Gen- eral Ban Ki-moon said the games "celebrate the best of humanity" and appealed for an Olympic truce, call- ing on "all warring parties to lay down their weap- ons" during the two weeks of sporting achievement. There were times after the International Olympic Committee selected Rio ahead of Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid in 2009 when it seemed that the city of 6.5 million people might not get its act together for the world's greatest sporting mega-event. The spreading health crisis of the mosquito-born Zika virus kept some athletes away. Promises to clean up Rio's filthy waters re- mained unfulfilled. The heavy bill for the games, at least $12 billion, made them unpopular with many. Heavily armed secu- rity stopped a small group of protesters from getting close to the stadium ahead of the ceremony. But with more than a dash of "gambiarra," the Brazilian art of quick- fixes and making do, Rio is ready. Just. The honor of declaring the games open will fall to Michel Temer, Brazil's unpopular interim presi- dent, standing in for sus- pended President Dilma Rousseff. Her ouster less than four months out from the games for alleged bud- get violations was one of the many complications that roiled Brazil's Olym- pic preparations and im- pacted the opening cer- emony itself. Fewer than 25 foreign heads of state were expected, with oth- ers seemingly staying away to avoid giving the impres- sion of taking sides amid Brazil's leadership uncer- tainty. As Brazilian officials took their seats in the sta- dium, there were shouts of "out with Temer" from sec- tions of the crowd.
