A four-month supply of the insecticide product, Mosquito Dunks, is available on the third floor in the Environmental Health Division. The round-shaped product is placed in water, where it floats and kills mosquito larvae without harming wildlife and pets. The Health Department is also partnering with Fort Bragg and N.C. State University to conduct a surveillance program to update the distribution range of two mosquitoes known to carry the Zika virus. Samples of mosquito eggs and larva will be collected through October and a final statewide survey report will be sent for review by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services in December. In addition to participation in the survey program, environmental health has stocked most ponds in the county with the Gambusia fish, a small fish that eats mosquito larvae. No cases of Zika have been caused by mosquitoes in the United States.
