MAY 18-24, 2016 UCW 19 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Here's a rundown of military-related events that will be happening in the city Memorial Day weekend. Be sure to mark your calendars for some family fun. The Downtown Alliance is set to host its monthly 4th Friday events, which will have a military theme in honor of Memorial Day. On the following day, Saturday May 21, the annual Field of Honor opening ceremony will take place starting at 10 a.m. The Field of Honor is a visual, patriotic tribute to honor service men and women. American flags line the field in front of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum honoring soldiers, veterans and their families. This year there is something new. For those wanting to participate by sponsoring a flag or flags, but who don't have a loved one to honor, you can now just write "fallen" on the sponsor form and a name of a fallen solider who died in combat since 9/11 will be selected for you. The opening ceremony speaker is Maj. Gen. Richard Clarke, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division and Col. Jensen the 18th Air Support Operations Group Commander. This event is free and open to the public. Freedom Memorial Park hosts a Memorial Day Ceremony on May, 30. This is a military-oriented formal event to include a presentation of the colors by the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, the Missing Man Table, a singer for the national anthem, a senior military officer as guest speaker, wreath presentations to the various war memorial monuments, a military firing squad and a military bugler playing taps. The program begins at 10 a.m. Bleacher seating for 300 fills very quickly so lawn chairs are recommended. The Airborne and Special Operations Museum is sponsoring Movie in the Camp on May 21. This year's Movie in the Camp is Max. It is about a dog that helped U.S. Marines in Afghanistan. Max returns to the U.S. and is adopted by his handler's family after suffering a traumatic experience. The movie is free to the public, bring your own blanket or lawn chairs. The movie starts at dusk. Snacks are available for purchase (popcorn, hot dogs, sodas, etc). All proceeds go to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum Foundation in support of the museum. Also on the May 21, the museum will host another event called Art Awareness. From 1 to 4 p.m., visit the many public art pieces on display at the ASOM. The exhibit will take place both outside and inside the museum. Art Awareness outside the museum will feature monuments and statues that pay tribute military heroes. The John Koenig Memorial Walkway and Fritz Healy Memorial Walkway that line the Parade Field feature a statue of General Hugh Shelton, created by Paul Moore and commissioned by Ross Perot. The SOF K9 Memorial, the only memorial of its kind in the world, stands guard over the Iron Mike Statue, both, respectively, tributes to paratroopers past, present and future and the canines who stood beside them. Inside, the museum will display dioramas, artifacts and aircraft. The ASOM features artwork throughout the museum grounds. Inside, visitors will see busts of the airborne and special operations community legends like Col. Aaron Bank and Gen. William Yarborough. Throughout the museum, original propaganda posters of World War II may be seen as all other works of art scattered throughout the building. For more information, visit www. asomf.org.
