Ontheair theRaiderstookabigstep forward in his second year. He threw 32 touchdown passes and for 3,987 yards overall as Oakland im- proved from three wins to seven and proved ca- pable of competing with top teams as evidenced by a win at eventual Super Bowl champion Denver in December. Expectations are only higher in year three af- ter general manager Reg- gie McKenzie delivered in free agency with the addi- tions of guard Kelechi Ose- mele, pass rusher Bruce Ir- vin, cornerback Sean Smith and safety Reggie Nelson. "It's easy to get excited, but I feel like we're more ex- cited about the work that we have to put in," Mack said. "Getting to know each other, getting to grind with each other, and then being on the field and getting the communication down pat, I'm more excited about those things. That's the stuff that you can really tell how great the defense will be based on those things." Notes •TheRaidersannounced the signings of restricted free agents: QB Matt Mc- Gloin, OL Matt McCants and CB Neiko Thorpe. • Oakland also signed exclusive rights free agents WR Seth Roberts, DL Denico Autry, DE Shelby Harris, TE Gabe Holmes, S Tevin McDonald and LB Korey Toomer. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 up an earned run on 3 hits with a walk and a strike- out. The Spartans (14-6 over- all, 4-2 league) are sched- uled to face the Enterprise Hornets (12-10 overall, 0-6 league) at 4 p.m. today in Redding. WARRIORS 11, REDDING CHRISTIAN 9 After a big win Friday over Los Mo- linos, the Mercy Warriors hosted the rival Redding Christian Lions Satur- day afternoon for another notch in the win column. The Warriors jumped ahead with 2 in the first and a big 5-run second, but the Lions wouldn't go qui- etly, putting up a run in the first and 3 each in the third and fourth innings. Mercy tacked on a run in the sixth, but the Lions tied it at 9 in the top of the sev- enth. A 2-run shot off the bat of freshman Will Nel- son gave Mercy the walk- off win. Nelson was named player of the game, going 1-3 with the game-win- ning home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI; Bryce Baer was 1-2 with a home run and 3 RBI; Travis Gor- den was 4-4 with 2 runs and an RBI; Richie Borges was 2-4 with 2 RBI; Dar- tagnan Kingwell was 1-3 with 2 runs; Kavin Mc- Clellan was 1-2 with a run and Jonathan Ross was 0-4 with an RBI. McClel- lan stole 2 bags. Borges pitched 5 in- nings, giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 8 walks, while striking out 11. Gor- den gets the win, going 2 innings with no earned runs on 2 hits and strik- ing out 3. The Warriors (4-7 over- all, 3-1 league) are sched- uled to host the Liberty Christian Patriots (0-4 overall, 0-3 league) at 1 p.m. Thursday at Diamond Park. LOS MOLINOS VS. AMERI- CAN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY The Los Molinos Bulldogs (6-4 overall, 2-2 league) are scheduled to host the American Christian Acad- emy Eagles (8-8 overall, 4-0 league) at 4 p.m. today. Baseball FROM PAGE 1 LADY SPARTANS WIN 1 OF 3 AT TOURNEY The Red Bluff Lady Spartans came away from the Wolf Pack Invitational tournament in Redding with a 2-1 loss to Roseburg Friday and a 5-4 win over Pleasant Val- ley and 10-0 loss to Foothill on Saturday. As of 5 p.m. Monday, no individual stats had been posted for the Spartans for any of the games. The Spartans (7-6 over- all, 1-2 league) are sched- uled to face the Chico Wildcats at 4 p.m. today in Chico. LADY CARDINALS DROP 3 IN REDDING The Corning Lady Cardinals took home 3 losses in weekend tour- nament play, losing 10-7 to Eureka Friday and 12-5 to Pleasant Valley and 2-1 to Enterprise on Saturday. As of 5 p.m. Monday, no individual stats had been posted for the Cardinals for any of the games. The Cardinals (2-9 over- all, 0-2 league) are sched- uled to face the Ander- son Cubs (1-7 overall, 0-4 league) at 3 p.m. today in Anderson. So ball FROM PAGE 1 — twice. Ethiopia claimed its sixth title in the men's race — including three of the last four — to go with six more in the distaff di- vision. Hayle (HAY-lee) pulled away from Desisa as they crossed over the Massa- chusetts Turnpike head- ing into Kenmore Square. He tapped his chest as he ran down Boylston Street, held his arms out to bask in the cheers of the crowd and then, after crossing the finish line, did a celebratory skip-jump. Baysa trailed by 37 sec- onds at the 35-kilometer checkpoint before chasing down Tirfi Tsegaye on Bea- con Street in Brookline, two miles from the finish line. The two-time Chicago Mar- athon champion won by 44 seconds in 2:29:19. Joyce Chepkirui was third — the lone Kenyan to medal. Most of the top Ameri- cans, including 2014 win- ner Meb Keflezighi, skipped the race after running in the U.S. Olympic trials in February. Other countries pick their Olympic teams by committee, and the per- formances in Boston could help Monday's top finishers earn a ticket to Rio de Ja- neiro. "This is a major mara- thon," Baysa said through an interpreter. "We don't know what they are think- ing, but we are confident they will select me." Zachary Hine of Dallas was the top U.S. man, fin- ishing 10th. Neely Spence Gracey, of Superior, Colo- rado, was the first Ameri- can woman to finish, com- ing in ninth. Gracey was born into marathoning: Her father was the No. 2 American in Boston in 1989; the next year she was born on race day while he was running. She and Sarah Crouch, of Blowing Rock, North Caro- lina, were among the lead- ers through the first seven miles before falling behind. "The energy was spectac- ular," said Gracey, who ran against Crouch in college. "Wewerecommentingback and forth saying: 'Wow! We are leading the Boston Mar- athon. We need to take this in and relish the moment."' On a clear day with a slight headwind, cool temperatures at the start warmed to 62 degrees by the time the winners reached the Back Bay. It warmed further as the day went on — an added chal- lenge for the 27,491 runners who left Hopkinton in four waves on Monday morning. Fifty years after Bobbi Gibb sneaked onto the course and became the first woman to finish the race, more than 14,000 women were in the field that made the 26.2-mile trek to Copley Square, where a commem- orative logo greeted them at the finish. Gibb served as thegrandmarshalthisyear, riding down Boylston in a sportscarbeforebreaking a ceremonial finish-line tape. Defending women's champion Caroline Rotich was among the first to fall out, droppingawayfromthe leaders at a water station about 5 miles in and walk- ing to the side of the road. No reason for her with- drawal was available. Baysa, 29, also fell out of the lead but never stopped running. She was out of the pic- ture as the women's lead- ers ran through Heartbreak Hill, but soon after the TV cameras picked up a bob- bing yellow figure running along the side of the road. As she gained, it was clear that she had saved enough energyforthewinningkick. She caught Chepkirui on Beacon Street in Brook- line with about 2.5 miles remaining, then sped past Tsegaye on the run toward Kenmore Square. The gap grew larger over the final mile and Baysa turned onto Boylston Street all alone. "Winning the Boston Marathon is very big," she said. "To win the Boston Marathon means that I am the best athlete in a very competitive field, including my teammates." Hayle, 21, earned his first major marathon victory. He has run four smaller mar- athons since 2014, winning three and finishing second in Dubai in January. Marcel Hug of Swit- zerland won his second straight wheelchair race in a three-man sprint to the finish. Ten-time champion Ernst Van Dyk was second by 1 second and he held off third-place finisher Kurt Fearnley in a photo finish, winning by the width of a tire. Tatyana McFadden, of Clarksville, Maryland, won the women's wheelchair race for the fourth year in a row.
