Lemi Berhanu Hayle won the 120th edition of the men's race, and Atsede Baysa overcame a 37-second deficit on the wom- en's side for Ethiopia's first-ever sweep of the world's most presti- gious marathon. Hayle finished in 2 hours, 12 minutes, 45 seconds to beat de- fending champion Lelisa Desisa by 47 seconds. Yemane Tsegay was an additional 30 seconds back to round out an all-Ethiopian top three. "In sports, sometimes that hap- pens. But not always," said Desisa, who also won the 2013 race. "It is the performance on the day." Kenya had dominated the Bos- ton Marathon since the profes- sional era began in 1986, winning the men's race 14 straight times from 1991-2004 and 20 out of 22 before Desisa earned the first of his two victories three years ago. But the Kenyans have been be- set with doping problems. The World Anti-Doping Agency put the country's athletics program on probation after more than 40 athletes tested positive for perfor- mance-enhancing drugs since the 2012 Olympics, including three- time Boston winner Rita Jeptoo. LOS MOLINOS The Lady Bull- dogs softball team went up early with a 5-run second in- ning against the visiting Mercy Warriors Friday afternoon and held on for a 7-6 win over their cross-county rivals. The Warriors got on the board with a run in the first and the Bulldogs answered with the big second inning before Mercy put up 2 more in the third. The Bull- dogs extended their lead with 2 in the fifth inning and it would be just enough to hold off a late rally by the Warriors, who added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. As of Monday afternoon, no individual stats had been posted for the Bulldogs. The Warriors gave player of the game honors to Cheyanne Johnson, who went 2-4 with a home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI; An- nie Feser went 2-4 with a run and an RBI and Gillian Coelho went 0-4 with an RBI. Selena Dobson was 1-2 with a run; Au- brey Bell was 1-3 and Maggie Sheppard was 1-4. Bell, a freshman, took the loss, giving up 5 earned runs on 10 hits over 6 innings and strik- ing out 9. The Bulldogs (5-7 overall, 1-2 league) are scheduled to host the Redding Christian Lions (6-4-1 overall, 1-0 league) at 4 p.m. Fri- day. The Warriors (3-6 overall, 0-2 league) are scheduled to face the Chester Volcanoes (9-7 overall, 2-0 league) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 in Chester. SOFTBALL Lady Bulldogs hang on for win over Warriors By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA Derek Carr acknowl- edged a different feeling when he walked back into the Oakland Raiders' facility for the start of the offseason program Monday. With veterans like Charles Woodson and Justin Tuck now retired, Carr knows now is the time for players like him and fel- low third-year star Khalil Mack to increase their leadership role and help the Raiders take the next step to becoming a contender in the AFC West. "It was kind of weird," Carr said. "I felt older when I walked in, if that makes any sense. I was sit- ting there as we were doing some of the testing with the strength and conditioning coaches, and I looked at the sheet and I was like, 'There are barely any guys over 30 on this team.' I sat there and I looked at it and was like, 'It's time to really take over."' After a promising season last year and key offseason additions in free agency, the Raiders head into 2016 with more expectations than they've had in more than a decade. The team that has not had a winning record or made the playoffs the past 13 seasons ap- pears to have all the ingredients to end that drought this season. The Raiders began the process of making that happen when they opened the offseason program Monday in year two under coach Jack Del Rio. "On paper it looks great right now," Carr said. "Paper champs, all those kind of things. Every- body is picking us to do this. None of that matters unless we put the work in. Everyone knows that. ... For me, as the leader of this team, I am just really going to concen- trate on seeing where everybody is at and then pushing each other just to be better every single day." Carr has seen plenty of prog- ress since joining the Raiders as a second-round pick out of Fresno State two years ago. He quickly won the starting job and then en- dured a trying rookie season that featured 10 straight losses to open the season, a mid-year coaching change from Dennis Allen to Tony Sparano and the expected diffi- culties transitioning from college to the pro game.
