ByRuthNicolaus SpecialtotheDailyNews RED BLUFF The final perfor- mance of the Red Bluff Round- Up wrapped up Sunday with eight professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls taking home the title of 2016 Round-Up champion. For a certain horse, it was the second time he had carried a champ to the pay window. Ty Erickson, Helena, Montana, won the steer wrestling champi- onship with a time of 28.4 seconds on four runs, but he rode a horse who is no stranger to Red Bluff. "Yellow," so named for his color, was Ty's choice of horses today, and last year, was ridden by his owner Tyler Waguespack to win the 2015 steer wrestling title. Yellow wasn't the only help Ty got for his run. He came into the finals round in Red Bluff in fifth place, but after Will Stovall and Harley Cole both broke the bar- rier, adding ten seconds to their times, and Brad McGilchrist failed to make a qualified run, the door was wide open for the Helena, Mont. man. "That's what happens in these kinds of situa- tions, these short rounds," Erick- son said. "There's a lot more pres- sure on guys in short rounds." But he was quick to point out that his win may have been luck as much as skill. "They had some bad luck today. It went my way today, and that's rodeo." Erickson has competed at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo twice, in 2014 and again last year, and finished the 2015 season in fourth place in the world. Two other steer wrestlers in ad- dition to Erickson and Wagues- pack rode Yellow in the short round. Jason Thomas, who won third at the Round-Up, and Timmy Sparing also rode Yellow. One volunteer serving in the kitchen said he had been at the event since almost the beginning and it dates back to 1968. Kiwanis has been providing the camp to community children for 54 years. The event, which had its regu- lars like Les Schwab employees, who got brought two tables of people, and the California High- way Patrol, who filled a table on their own, and drew between 250 and 300 people about 9 a.m., said Kiwanis Camp Dean Beth Birk. At that time, the lines were out the door and to the sidewalk's end. "We have a lot of good com- munity support," Birk said. "This breakfast is a great time to recruit kids for the camp. Thank you to the community for your generos- ity and support." The camp, which serves fourth- through sixth-graders, takes place starting July 20 and is for students at schools that feed into Red Bluff High School, Birk said. It is provided free for all campers. COMMUNITY By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Crowds left little open space in the prime view- ing locations along Main Street by about 9 a.m. Saturday for the 62nd annual Red Bluff Round- Up Parade that started at 10 a.m. and after several days of wind and cooler temperatures, the sun was shining with only a light breeze. There were just shy of 100 en- tries after a few of those planning to attend dropped out, with en- tries from throughout the county and beyond and members of the McKenzie family leading the way behind the Tehama County Young Marines who posted the colors. The McKenzie family has been involved with the Red Bluff Round-Up since the 1920s with Abner and Jack McKenzie serv- ing as pickup men in the early years and Abner going on to be- come arena director, Announcer Cal Hunter said. Abner also was involved in starting the Red Bluff Gelding Sale with his friend Bill Owens and Abner's grandson, Zane Glines, presently serves as a director. The entire McKenzie family has also participated in the Round-Up Parade for a number of years. Amanda Jenkins served as Hunter's co-announcer.
