APRIL 13-19, 2016 UCW 19 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM A fresh perspective on the things that matter Covering News, Views, Arts and Entertainment in print and online. UP & COMING WEEKLY www.upandcomingweekly.com Airport Terminal Development Underway by BRADLEY S. WHITED, A.A.E. Our community's airport has been in the planning stages of terminal development for the last year. We have met with the FAA Airports District Office, Transportation Security Administration, tenant managers and other stakeholders in planning for the upcoming improvements. At this point, we are scheduled to bid the project in mid-June 2016 and begin construction in November of this year. American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines are all excited about the new changes to their public and non-public operational spaces. Similarly, Avis/Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Enterprise, Hertz and National/Alamo rental car agencies are also pleased with proposed ready space upgrades and terminal office improvements. The upgrade costs taxpayers no money and is funded by grants and Airport retained earnings. The oldest portion of the Airline terminal was built in 1969 and expanded in 1987. This upgrade will replace the major utility components of the building. The vintage 1969 elevator and escalators will also be replaced in a new addition to the front of the building, providing a vertical transition from Ticketing to the security check point and departure concourses, then upon return take you to the lower-level baggage claim. New and renovated bathrooms will provide a modern appearance. A new restaurant space will be created on the secure side of the terminal, allowing passengers to clear security and then enjoy a cup of coffee or meal. The airline ticketing will be completely changed to relocate the TSA's baggage screening process behind the ticketing area. A replacement of Concourse A will resemble Concourse B with two jet bridges and a ground loading gate that provides additional passenger seating capacity. Gates will be numbered simply 1 through 7. The front of the building will include a new glass and canopy, while the shell of the building will be changed from stucco to insulated metal panels. Interior LED lighting will provide a fresh atmosphere and the entire building will be more energy-efficient. Our goal throughout this process is to make the customer experience effortless. The construction period is estimated at 30 months, concluding in the summer of 2019. During this entire remake of the terminal building, we will be required to continue terminal operations and functions. We ask in advance for your cooperation during this process, knowing that upon completion we will have created a major improvement to one of the community's major gateways. The Airport has been self-sustaining since 1994 and has cost taxpayers no money, including neither property or sales tax. Helping the Economy In the first quarter of 2016, our airport has seen a positive trend in its enplanements. With three legacy carriers, Fayetteville travelers are finding that its airport is more than able to meet their travel needs. The more our community flies, the more airframes and routes the airlines will supply. Thanks for helping us grow! When you use your local airport, you support the airlines who have chosen to invest in our community to provide needed air service. The air service they provide creates convenience and great connectivity from Fayetteville, as well as a positive economic impact here in the North Carolina Sandhills. According to a 2016 study conducted by the N.C. Division of Aviation, the economic contribution of the Fayetteville Regional Airport to our community exceeds $312 million.
