Over t ime, his collec t ion g rew and Cherr y decided to share his passion w it h ot hers. He'd go to t rade shows in and around R aleigh and ot her Nor t h Carolina locales to sell items t hat he hoped would bring as much joy to ot hers as t hey did to him. A year or so ago, Cherr y decided t hat he could reach more people by host ing a show instead of being a vendor at one. That was t he beg inning of t he Spor t s Cards, Comics, Toys and Collec t ibles Show t hat is hosted at t he Crow n t w ice a year. On April 16-17, Cherr y is set to host his t hird show, only t his one w ill have a few excit ing surprises. "I learned a lot put t ing on my f irst and second shows," said Cherr y. "This one is going to be t he best yet . I am bring ing in Jose Canseco to sig n autog raphs on Sat urday. We are also hav ing a silent auc t ion to raise money for former Hope Mills mayor Eddie Dees." D e e s w a s r e c ent l y d i a g no s e d w i t h p a nc r e a t ic c a nc er. A well-loved citizen of Hope Mills, Dees is a hobbyist as well. In fact, that is how Cherry met him. "He's just a really good g uy and I felt t hat we needed to do somet hing for him," said Cherr y. "He suppor ted us for t he f irst shows and I really appreciate t hat . He is a st and-up g uy. A nd it is a real shame what he is going t hrough." The silent auc t ion items are most ly spor t s memoriabila releated including autog raphed items, some g if t basket s f rom a local vendor, baseball t icket s and more. The silent auc t ion is f rom 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sat urday w it h w inners announced at 3 p.m. Baseball fans won't want to miss baseball legend Jose Canseco at t he show, too. Canseco was born in Cuba and immig rated to t he U. S. w it h his family when he was a young boy. He rose to fame in t he 1980s, break ing records in Major Leag ue Baseball. In 1986, his f irst f ull season, Canseco hit 33 home runs and was named t he A merican Leag ue Rook ie of t he Year. In 1988, he was t he f irst player in t he major leag ue to have 42 home runs and 40 stolen bases in t he same season. That scored him t he A merican Leag ue MV P Award. He played for t he Oak land A s, t he Texas R angers, t he Boston Red Sox, t he Toronto Blue Jays, t he New York Yankees and t he Chicago W hite Sox before ret iring in 2001. During his career, Canseco scored 462 home runs, six all-st ar selec t ions, one A merican Leag ue MV P award and t wo World Series championships. "It took a while to coordinate getting him here," said Cherry. "He's a busy guy and couldn't make it to the last show, but we are glad to have him at this one. I think the people coming to the show will enjoy being able to see him and get his autograph." Cherry is expecting 40 or so vendors for this show. While he hopes to continue growing the semi-annual event, he says it is always fun to see what the vendors bring. "There is a good selection of sports cards, sports memorabilia, toys, cars and more. Anyone with even a lit tle interest in any of that is going to want to come out and see what we have going on." The show runs f rom 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat urday, April 16 and f rom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 17. There is a $2 discount for milit ar y. Admission is $5. K ids 12 and under get in f ree.
