APRIL 13-19, 2016 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Perhaps one of Fayetteville Technical Community College's best- kept secrets is the High School Connections program, which allows local juniors and seniors to take tuition-free col- lege courses. Most students take just a small handful of cours- es, often earning college certifi- cates upon grad- uation, but a select few manage to find the time and the energy to earn a full associate degree during their high school years. The opportunities for learning and advancement are endless, and the program has been growing in both size and scope over the last several semesters. Enrollment is now open for the 2016-2017 school year. The High School Connections team at FTCC has been hard at work, holding parent nights or daytime infor- mation sessions at almost all of the local high schools. Each high school has a designated point-of- contact for the program (usually a counselor located in the school's guidance office). Students can choose from a variety of college- transfer core academic classes (such as English, math, psychology and foreign language) or from one of our 30 plus Career and Technical Education certification programs. Here are some of our newest additions for our CTE areas: Health and Fitness Science, in addition to our long-standing Nurse Aide and Emergency Medical Science programs, are available for rising seniors only. Global Logistics will be offered to high school stu- dents for the first time, as will Civil Engineering Technology classes. All of the Information Technology programs, such as Digital Media, Mobile App Development, Network Defense and Mobile and Web Basics, have received a com- plete overhaul in order to stay curent with the ever-chang- ing demands of technology. Programs that are not new for 2016-2017 but continue to grow include Accounting, Computer- Integrated Machining, Construction Technology, Emergency Management, Fire Protection Technology, Green Sustainable Architecture, Horticulture, Office Assistant, and Photovoltaic Systems. Another relatively new program that is quickly becoming a "fan favorite" is FTCC's Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology pro- gram, which has been in the news in recent weeks due to its popularity and 100 percent job placement for graduates of the associate degree program. If you have missed out so far on taking advantage of this program, it's not too late! Registration is ongoing for Summer 2016 classes which begin on Monday, May 23, and are open to any student who will have completed 10th grade, but not yet graduated, prior to the first day of class. Local high school students should see their counselors for more information; home school students are advised to contact our office directly. Looking ahead, the priority dead- line for Fall 2016 classes ist 5 p.m. on Monday, May 16. Although the program will continue to enroll stu- dents after this date as space allows, priority is given to those who have their paperwork submitted before the deadline.
