ByJamesWilson Iwillneverforgetthe night of worship and prayer at a Hollywood church that climaxed a statewide prayer effort known as the I-5 Project. Hundreds of Christians stationed themselves on freeway overpasses along the Interstate 5 Corri- dor and prayed for God's peace. I was privileged to stand and praise God for what He had done. Identi- fying myself as represent- ing the Northern Califor- nia, I blessed the people of the Southland. The host pastor then stood, visi- bly weeping. He said, "We are gathered here from the north and the south of California. We of the Southland have repeat- edly denigrated our broth- ers to the north. We have taken their water…because we can. That man blessed us on behalf of the people we have abused. We need to repent. We need to re- pent now." His statement launched years of cooperation and honor between our re- gions as Southern Cali- fornians went north to bless and northerners like me came south. The proj- ect, and the pastor's im- passioned words, were equally the product of the Spirit of the Living God — and every bit as much as any word of proph- ecy, healing and raising the dead, or the promised leading into truth that once prompted the writ- ing of the Bible. Yet Chris- tians enthralled with the miracles, the revelation, and gifts like prayer lan- guages and other tongues, often fail to see the deeper work of the Spirit to bring forgiveness and reconciliation. That pastor — whose people preferred a com- partmentalized Holy Spirit — was ousted from his po- sition within a year or so. God is no longer going to tolerate this partial alle- giance, nor the rage that often answers a challenge to it. In this season of the Fourth Great Awakening we are called to re-engage with the Holy Spirit — all of the Spirit — and we will see the wonders of God in this season only if our re- pentant hearts are willing to seek that radical re-en- gagement. Charismatics like myself — dedicated to embracing the whole of Scripture — take joy in passages like 1 Corinthians 4:20 that we preach a Gospel of power and not mere words; we thrill to John 14:12-14 where Jesus says we will do the things we see Him do and even greater things than these when we invoke the Spirit in His Name. Evangelicals likewise feel their hearts strangely warmed when they read and reflect on passages in John 14-17 that prom- ise the Spirit — Author of the Bible — will guide us into all truth after the de- parture of Our Lord to the right hand of the Fa- ther. We charismatics need to spend more time in the places that warm evangel- icals; evangelicals need to spend more time appreci- ating that the gifts are as much for today as for any time. Both streams need to re-engage and re-embrace the dimensions of God's Spirit that lie dormant in their corporate hearts. And what about the main- liners? Their virtue is their re- membrance that when the Lord said He would be present in sacramen- tal acts like Baptism and Holy Communion He was not blowing smoke; these events are not commem- orative but rather repre- sentational in the most lit- eral sense. Charismatics and evangelicals need to embrace the Spirit's prom- ise of Real Presence. At the same time mainlin- ers need to get a clue; the same Spirit who comes when we break bread and immerse in water is heal- ing far more broken bod- ies and broken hearts to- day than He ever did be- fore. And that same Spirit is still the guarantor of re- liability in the Scriptures He caused to be written millennia ago. The National Day of Prayer provided an amaz- ing Holy Spirit opportu- nity. After the ceremo- nial portion concluded I deployed prayer teams throughout our city to walk and prayer loca- tions open to the public. I led the team praying over the downtown area, in- cluding the Arts Coun- cil building that sports a statue of the Hindu god- dess of assassins — Kali — on its front lawn. As we prayed blessings from the public sidewalk a staffer came boiling out of the building to accuse us of breaching the separation of church and state. I ex- plained it was precisely be- cause of the First Amend- ment we had every right to pray in public but he did not cool down. I said we were wanting only to bless in any case. When he growled, "I don't want your blessing," I spread my hands and said, "Too late." Only the Holy Spirit could have supplied a return so quick, so mild, and so true. All of us need to em- brace all of Him — the Holy Spirit — if we are to recognize the new life God is pouring out in this new- est Great Awakening. By Nicole Winfield and Rachel Zoll The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Pope Fran- cis said Friday that Catho- lics should look to their own consciences rather than rely exclusively on church rules to negotiate the complexi- ties of sex, marriage and family life, demanding the church shift emphasis from doctrine to mercy in con- fronting some of the thorn- iest issues facing the faith- ful. In a major church doc- ument entitled "The Joy of Love," Francis made no explicit change in church doctrine and up- held church teaching on the lifelong bond of mar- riage between a man and a woman. But in selectively citing his predecessors and em- phasizing his own teach- ings in strategically placed footnotes, Francis made in- novative openings in pas- toral practice for Catholics who civilly remarry and sig- naled that he wants noth- ing short of a revolution in the way priests guide ordi- nary Catholics in their spir- itual life. He said the church must no longer sit in judgment and "throw stones" at those who fail to live up to the Gospel's ideals of perfec- tion in marriage and fam- ily life. "I understand those who prefer a more rigor- ous pastoral care which leaves no room for con- fusion," he wrote. "But I sincerely believe that Je- sus wants a church atten- tive to the goodness which the Holy Spirit sows in the midst of human weak- ness." On thorny issues such as contraception, Francis stressed that a couple's indi- vidual conscience, educated in church teaching — and not just dogmatic rules im- posed on them across the board from above — must guide their decisions and the church's pastoral prac- tice. "We have been called to form consciences, not re- place to them," he said. He insisted the church's aim is to reintegrate and welcome all its members. He called for a new lan- guage to help Catholic fam- ilies cope with today's prob- lems. VATICAN Po pe Fr an ci s ta lk s lo ve a nd m ar ri ag e Tehama County Church Directory RedBluff....
