Ontheair Antonio, last winning on Feb. 14, 1997, when Tim Duncan was still in col- lege. They did win one of three games there in the playoffs in 2013, but lost in their only trip to San Anto- nio earlier this season. Golden State will need to win there again to have a chance at setting the re- cord. Kerr asked his players a few weeks ago if 73 wins was important to them. When most said yes, he made a pact with young stars like Curry, Green, Klay Thompson and Har- rison Barnes that he would not force them to sit as long as they were honest about their health. "I want to finish out these last three games," Thompson said. "I pride myself on playing every game. I'm still young in my career. I'm only 26. When I'm 36 I'll be looking to rest more." Kerr said he would dis- cuss the choice again with his coaches and players Friday on the plane ride to Memphis. He has given time off recently to veter- ans like center Andrew Bogut and guard Shaun Livingston. Other play- ers like sixth man Andre Iguodala and backup cen- ter Festus Ezeli have gotten time off because of injuries. But no one on the young core has gotten a game off since Curry missed a game with a sprained ankle on March 1. "I'm not sure they actu- ally need a rest physically. But maybe a break men- tally will do them some good," Kerr said. "On the other hand, I'm pretty sure we're not going to be in this position again next year. You can't keep winning at this level. It's a very unique situation." Kerr knows well what the Warriors have accom- plished, having played all 82 games as a key reserve on the Bulls team that set the mark. He has noted the parallels of the toll the 82- game grind takes late in a season and knows that what his Warriors team is aiming to do is even harder than what Chicago did in breaking the mark of 69 wins set by the Los Ange- les Lakers in 1971-72. "In '96 we had to get to 70," Kerr said. "We have to get to 73. When you're talk- ing about an 82-game sea- son, three games is huge. This is a monumental task if that's what we're call- ing it. Yes, I'm kind of con- fused with how we should approach it." Green and Curry have been the most vocal play- ers about wanting the re- cord, while some others like Iguodala and Bogut have downplayed its im- portance. Green made a point this week of telling his teammates that they should feel free to sit out a game if they feel like they need a rest and not feel as if they are letting team- mates down. "The goal is to win a championship, and no- body should sacrifice that for anything in this regu- lar season," Curry said. "If you're able to play, and feel like you can go out there and give what you got, and continue to build momen- tum into the playoffs, then we'll do it. I think that's kind of the majority." Warriors FROM PAGE 1 MARCIO JOSE SANCHEZ — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry, center, scores past the San Antonio Spurs' Danny Green (14), Tim Duncan (21) and Kawhi Leonard (2) during the second half Thursday in Oakland. Still in the mix was Ja- son Day, who sputtered along to a 73 but was only five shots behind. "It almost feels like a U.S. Open where you need to survive," Day said. "And I'm trying my best to sur- vive right now." Spieth finished a round over par at Augusta for the first time in his three Mas- ters appearances. Com- ing off his wire-to-wire victory last year, that par save from the bunker on the 18th allowed him to set a record for most consecu- tive rounds in the lead. Ar- nold Palmer was atop the leaderboard for six straight rounds in 1960 and the opening two rounds in 1961, though he shared in those last two rounds. Even so, it was hard to get past Spieth's mistakes — a four-putt double bogey on No. 5, a three-putt bo- gey on No. 16. Frustration began to set in on the 10th when Spieth posed over his approach until it came up short of the green. "How is that into the wind?" he said, before turning and having a stern conversa- tion with himself. McIlroy was as many as eight shots behind and never lost sight of the dif- ficult conditions. He picked up birdies on the two par 5s on the back, and holed a 40-foot birdie putt on the 16th before finishing with a par save out of the trees. "I was at 8 under and you finish at 4. That's kind of tough," Spieth said. "I felt like I played better than 4 over from the fourth hole on." The gusts topped out at 30 mph on Friday, and it's not expected to get easier. Throw in the pressure on Spieth to become only the fourth back-to-back win- ner at the Masters, and a burden on McIlroy to fin- ish off the Grand Slam, and this could be theater at its finest. "Tomorrow is going to be more difficult than to- day," Spieth said. "Even par is one heck of a score to- morrow." He said anyone breaking par Saturday could move into the lead from as far back as 25th place. Spieth's par on the last hole not only kept him in the lead, it sent Phil Mick- elson home for the week- end because of the 10-shot rule. Mickelson shot a ca- reer-high 79 and finished at 7-over to miss the cut. Tom Watson missed the cut by two shots in his final Masters appearance, walk- ing up the 18th fairway to a standing ovation and warm applause. He parred his last four holes for a 78 and said later, "I'm glad I don't have to play that 18th hole anymore."
