MARCH 23-29, 2016 UCW 25 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM I didn't watch Gods of Egypt (127 minutes), I survived it. It was something that happened to me, like food poisoning, or a car accident. This is one of the worst theatrical releases of the last ten years (I would venture a guess that only Jem was worse). I am not saying that watching Gods of Egypt resulted in the kind of traumatic brain injury you usually only see in coma patients, but I may have grounds for a civil suit of some kind. Director Alex Proyas can cry all he wants on social media about how reviewers aren't giving his film a chance, but aside from agreeing that the cast was whitewashed to an offensive degree, I hadn't heard a thing before I sat down to watch it. The trailers didn't look that great, but I am a fan of mythology from around the world, and this could have been something worth seeing. Could have been, but, frankly, was not. From the opening scenes, in which Set (Gerard Butler) prowled around like a cosplayer having a bad day, to the "acting" of Brenton Thwaites as Bek, the entire nonsensical mess was overworked and underacted. Nikolaj Coster- Waldau will probably be alright, with all the Game of Thrones street cred, and Gerard Butler has always done three ridiculous movies for every good movie. Other than that, this movie was so lamentable that it could potentially take down the career of everyone else involved. The big issue dogging the movie even before its release was the use of white actors in most of the roles. Here's my theory — the script went around to quality, bankable actors of color (people like Idris Elba and Angela Basset) and they laughed themselves into a coma. The story is somehow basic and overly convoluted at the same time. The gods live with people on a f lat earth, and some of them are the Good Gods and some are the Jerk Gods. Set, the biggest Jerk God of them all, kills the God King Osiris (Bryan Brown) and makes all the attractive female cast members dress like Sports Illustrated swimsuit models. He plucks out the eyes of Horus (Coster- Waldau), revealing the first of only two cool things in the movie — gods bleed liquid gold. Large and in charge, Set immediately enslaves humans and puts them to work on his Enormous Tower of Freudian Symbolism, theoretically designed to catch the eye of the Sun god, Ra (Geoffrey Rus h— what is he doing in this piece of garbage?). Too bad for him that in the course of enslaving the entire human population he separated Bek from his lady love, Arm Candy McPlot Device (Courtney McEaton). Following movie rules, Bek immediately begins hero- ing around Egypt, helpfully reading from scrolls to the audience and pretending to be Indiana Jones. He does this very earnestly and I want to punch him repeatedly in the face. Eventually, he hooks up with Horus the Mopey-Mope, who is practicing his best pout in his father's tomb. Together, they travel to the second of two cool things in the movie — the Skyship of Ra, which is surrounded by an invisible lake of gold swirly bits. It looks pretty cool, unlike the rest of the movie, which looks pretty ridiculous. The story degenerates from there, battles happen and I don't really care who wins. Finally, the movie limps to its unsatisfyingly happy conclusion. Now playing at Patriot 14 + IMA X. God Awful Gods of Egypt (Rated PG-13) by HEATHER GRIFFITHS HEATHER GRIFFITHS, Contributing Writer.
