MARCH 16-22, 2016 UCW 13 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM The Harlem Globet rot ters st ar ted 85 years ago in 1926. The original name was the Savor y Big Five. Today it is one of the most globally-k now n spor t s teams. However, over the years, the organizat ion has t ransformed into something much more than the average professional spor t s team. The players tour the nat ion, impressing audiences w ith their t rick shot s, but also f ulf illing their t it le as Ambassadors of Goodw ill. With four out reach programs, this team makes a huge dif ference in communit ies across the world. And they are com- ing to Fayet tev ille on March 24. Zeus McClurk in is a Harlem Globet rot ter in his second season as a player. His love for basketball developed at a young age. "My older brother was a st reet basketball legend in Columbus, Ohio. His name is Rober t McClurk in. He took me all around the cit y w ith him, and that is how I caught my love for basketball. I was never good enough to get on the cour t w ith those g uys, but I would st and on the sidelines t w irling the basketball on my f inger. Lit t le did I k now the Globet rot ters pay you for that," McClurk in says. He is also the Guinness World Records record-holder for the most bas- ketball slam-dunk s in one minute: 15. For those unfamiliar with the Harlem Globetrotters, going to one of their shows is unlike any other basketball game in the world. "You don't have to be a basketball fan to enjoy this. People just want to re- lax and have fun, and that's what we are about. So leave your problems behind and come and enjoy some fun with us," McClurkin said. "Expect to see some highf ly ing slam-dunk s, half cour t t rick shot s and amazing ball handling. There w ill be a lot of audience par t ici- pat ion. We w ill bring you g uys dow n to the cour t to do a dance or something. We might come up into the st ands and eat your food. You never k now what to expect w ith the Globet rot ters." In addition to their amazing athletic skills, the Globetrotters focus a lot on communities. Their outreach programs focus on bullying, bring- ing joy to those in need of a smile, character building for young students and fitness. In celebration of their 90th season, the team has introduced The Great Assist Initiative this year. With this initiative, the Globetrot- ters pledge to spread 100 million smiles over the next 10 years. "This year we have the Great Assist program where people can nominate a notewor thy cause. The Harlem Globet rot ters want to help anyone in need and bring a smile to anyone who needs it," explains McClurk in. Though for him, the groups ant i-bully ing work really hit s home. "There is an epidemic of bully ing in our schools and I can share my ow n personal experience w ith bully ing. Then these k ids can see a 6'8 and 270 pound g uy who was bullied and now is a professional athlete," he said. The Harlem Globet rot ters are so much more than a basketball team. They are a legac y of leaders who work t irelessly to spread love, encouragement and joy ever y where they go. Fayet tev ille is excited to welcome them to the Crow n Coliseum on March 24 at 7 p.m. Ticket s can be purchased by v isit ing CapeFearTix. com or calling 888.257.6208.
