Their loss came against Foothill 3-0 Saturday. Los Molinos is scheduled to play the 4-1-1 West Val- ley Eagles on Friday in Cot- tonwood. Mercy falls to 0-2 with a 2-0 loss to Durham on Dec. 1. The Warriors are sched- uled to host Winters on Dec. 17. Soccer FROM PAGE 1 Manziel's stock has since plummeted amid off-field issues, and his future is in doubt as he closes his second season with the Browns (2-10). Staying true to their defensive assign- ments is how the 49ers (4- 8) plan to neutralize Man- ziel, whose mobility drew comparisons to the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson. "If you try to improvise, he'll improvise," Acker said. "You have to stay within your defense, do what you're assigned and not try to look around the field to see what he's do- ing." Manziel has been a mag- net for attention, and crit- icism. He spoke to Cleve- land media Wednesday for the first time since being demoted two weeks ago for partying during the bye week, and reportedly lying about it. "The past couple weeks I was forced to learn a hard lesson," Manziel told reporters, ESPN.com re- ported. "I had to learn it the hard way. I'm lucky to be back in the position I am. I'm definitely not tak- ing it lightly. "Obviously, there's a way to conduct yourself that 31 other guys do each week. You've got to follow that ex- ample and realize that this is a very prestigious situ- ation that I'm in, being a starting quarterback in the NFL. I've got to take pride in that and act ac- cordingly." Blaine Gabbert, his 49ers counterpart, under- stands what Manziel has faced. Gabbert, 26, is three years older than Manziel, and Gabbert was a first- round draft pick for a los- ing franchise (the Jackson- ville Jaguars) three years before Manziel was taken 22nd overall by the down- trodden Browns. "Those experiences, you learn from, and you grow up as you're in the NFL," Gabbert said. "He's kind of in that maturation process right now. Every quarter- back goes through it." Gabbert said he "wouldn't go that far, at all" in comparing himself to Manziel, whose wild side has been well-documented, including a 10-week stint in an addiction-treatment center after his rookie sea- son. "You understand he has some issues off the field that he has to get taken care of," Browns coach Mike Petine said on a con- ference call with Bay Area media. "He took strides in the offseason, and we were all proud of him that he recog- nized that he had a prob- lem and needed help for it," Petine added. "That's a tough thing to do deal with, especially in the pressure-cooker life of the NFL." On the field, the 49ers want to deal with Manziel by pressuring him in the pocket. "A playmaker" is how 49ers coach Jim Tomsula's first described Manziel, adding: "Obviously, he can use his feet. He can make it backyard ball." Manziel will be making his fourth start this sea- son. His stats are some- what comparable Gabbert, who is 2-2 as a starter. Manziel's passing line: 76-of-128, 933 yards, 5 touchdowns, 2 intercep- tions, 88.4 rating. Gabbert passing: 80-of-127, 963 yards, 5 TD, 3 INT, 89.5 rating. Manziel's rushing line: 17 attempts, 90 yards, 5.3 avg., 0 TD. Gabbert rush- ing: 19 attempts, 140 yards, 7.4 avg., 1 TD. "I'm still here for a rea- son," Manziel added. "I'm here now controlling what I can control and trying to play well. I still have a lot to prove in this league, ob- viously." Notes • Joe Montana says Gab- bert's "great job" merits an extended stay in that role. "He's definitely (someone) you need to keep around," Montana told the Sporting News on Wednesday. "He's proved he can not only play at the level to win games, but also in that offense. "That's key in proving his worth to the team. I don't know what will hap- pen with Colin (Kaeper- nick) or what their plans are with him, but at this point at time, I don't think you let Blaine get away." Gabbert is signed through 2016, at a base salary of $1.75 million. Kaepernick's $11.9 million base salary becomes guar- anteed if he's on the roster April 1. "I think he's done a great job going in under the circumstances, where the team is and how many people they've lost to inju- ries," Montana said. • Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner says it's been tough enduring so many losses with the Browns, having signed with his hometown team in free agency last year. "We had a chemistry un- matched," Whitner said on a conference call about the 2011-12 49ers. "I tend to miss those guys I played with there, from Dashon Goldson, to Tarell Brown, Carlos Rogers. "You never realize how special a situation was un- til you're gone," Whitner added. "If you talk to any of those guys, they'll tell you the same." Whitner also praised former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh as "the one that really kept that thing together." • NaVorro Bowman ranks third among inside linebackers with a week remaining in fans' online Pro Bowl voting. Bowman trails only the Carolina's Luke Kuechly and Green Bay's Clay Matthews. The only other 49er in the top 10 at his position is full- back Bruce Miller, who's 10th. • Tight end Vance Mc- Donald and outside line- backer Aaron Lynch did only individual condition- ing as part of the NFL's post-concussion protocol. • Left tackle Joe Staley did not practice because of a nagging knee injury. • Gerald Hodges could be in line to make his 49ers starting debut in place of inside linebacker Michael Wilhoite (ankle). Hodges had eight tackles in Sun- day's win at Chicago after Wilhoite's early exit. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 well as he and Carr have developed a fantastic re- lationship and the Raid- ers have an offensive foun- dation established that should be in place for the next several years. "He's literally one of my favorite teammates I've ever had because he's so passionate," Derek Carr said last month of Crabtree. "He's so com- petitive. He's one of the most competitive people I've ever been around and that works well with me." Raiders general man- ager Reggie McKenzie spoke in October about the way Cooper and Crab- tree are able to push each other. "The good, great play- ers, they look left to right and they want to know who they've got next to them, and they feed off each other," McKenzie said. "When they can look to the next guy and say, I can go to war with this guy, that's a competitive advantage." Contrary to the reputa- tion he might have gained with the 49ers, Crabtree has become of the Raiders leaders in the locker room and the extension speaks to that as much as it does his production. "When guys come here, they join our fam- ily," coach Jack Del Rio said last month. "We ask them to be great team- mates. He's been a great teammate. We ask them to bring us whatever leader- ship skills they have. He's done a great job express- ing that. It's not like we asked him to do anything different than we ask any- body else. That's what we ask of our guys. Come in here and be great team- mates, work hard every day and work with pur- pose and develop your skill, help us win games." • Defensive end Khalil Mack sat out Wednesday's practice with a knee in- jury that shouldn't yet be any cause for alarm. Mack has previously missed or been limited in practices with minor ailments this season to get some extra rest. Safety Charles Woodson also sat out Wednesday's practice, as per his routine. Center Rodney Hudson, who has missed three of the past four games with a sprained ankle, also didn't participate. Other players who sat out include: safety Nate Allen (knee), running back Taiwan Jones (knee), defensive end Shelby Har- ris (ankle) and linebackers Neiron Ball (knee) and Ko- rey Toomer (ankle). Cor- nerback Keith McGill, who has missed the past two games with an ankle injury, was a full partic- ipant.
