ByThomasBeaumont and Julie Bykowicz The Associated Press MANCHESTER, N.H. Even campaigning half as much as his rivals, Don- ald Trump is drowning them out in an echo cham- ber of insults and charged pronouncements that have taken over the presidential campaign. Frustrated GOP candidates trekking across Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina are strug- gling to be heard. All the while, some Re- publican officials worry the intense Trump focus is let- ting Democratic front-run- ner Hillary Clinton escape serious scrutiny as she works to strengthen her case to general election voters in the 2016 contest. "He's playing you like a fine Stradivarius violin," former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush told reporters who mobbed him after a cam- paign stop in New Hamp- shire this week — to get his reaction to Trump's re- marks. "This is what he does. He's an expert at this. He's phenomenal at gar- nering attention." Perhaps no one is more frustrated than Bush, the former Florida governor once thought the likely nominee but now fighting for relevance as Trump leads most Republican polls. Bush spoke at length during his campaign stops about his strategy to stop the Islamic State, which he said President Barack Obama and Clinton, as secretary of state, had fool- ishly dismissed. Yet the first question he faced from voters at a Tues- day night stop in southern New Hampshire had noth- ing to do with his poli- cies. "I'm going to say two words, probably the last two words you want to hear right now," said Tim Chrysostom, one of 125 in attendance. "Donald Trump." "What about him?" Bush replied curtly. With Trump's call to ban Muslims from entering the United States, just the lat- est example of his pro- vocative statements, the billionaire businessman has found a way to domi- nate the conversation even when he's not in the room. On Wednesday, Bush touted a plan to return more power to states. Ohio Gov. John Kasich ad- dressed national security in New York. And retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson outlined his plan to re- shape the U.S. health care system. Each made hardly a rip- ple in the race. Trump's newest com- ments on Muslims, how- ever, got attention. "I'm doing good for the Muslims," he declared in an interview to be aired Wednesday night on CNN. "Many Muslim friends of mine are in agreement with me." PRESIDENTIAL RACE Trump'sknackforcontroversy drowning out his GOP rivals By Lisa Lerer The Associated Press WATERLOO, IOWA Hillary Clinton accused Republi- cans of undermining Amer- ican efforts to fight Islamic terrorism, saying Wednes- day that the "hateful" cam- paign rhetoric of frontrun- ner Donald Trump and the rest of the GOP field is pro- viding new material for Is- lamic State propaganda. "Instead of showing lead- ership some of the leaders in this campaign are resorting to really hateful rhetoric," Clinton said at a town hall meeting. "Donald Trump, he does traffic in prejudice and paranoia. It's not only shameful, it's dangerous." Trump's proposal to block Muslims from enter- ing the U.S. has prompted widespread condemnation from lawmakers of both parties and from leaders across the globe. While Trump's GOP ri- vals use what Clinton calls "veiled language" to talk about their plans, Clinton noted that their remarks are also undermining ef- forts of US negotiators to build a global coalition against the group. Neurosurgeon Ben Car- son has questioned whether a Muslim-American could be president and both for- mer Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have floated the idea of a re- ligious test for Syrian refu- gees fleeing violence in the Middle East. "That runs counter from what I and others who've actually been in the situa- tion room know we have to do," said Clinton. "We have to enlist help from Amer- ican Muslims around the work in defeating the rad- ical jihadist and the hate- ful ideology they represent." Trump fired back, sin- gling out Clinton as his top competitor during a televi- sion appearance Wednes- day morning. "She doesn't have the strength or the stamina," he said on ABC's "Kelly and Michael" program. "I mean, you know, she's got a name and people will stupidly vote for her." Clinton is spending the day campaigning in Iowa, where she's promoting plans to stop corporate in- versions, a practice that permits U.S. companies to merge with corporations overseas to lower their tax bill. Experts say US compa- nies are hoarding roughly $2 trillion in profits abroad to reduce their taxes. Questioners focused largely on domestic issues, like climate change, health care and childcare costs — a reflection of the economic concerns that remain cen- tral in the Democratic pri- mary battle. "If you become success- ful in America," said Clin- ton, "you should pay what you owe just like everybody else." She added: "This is not only about fairness, this is about patriotism."
