The 2015 Jr. Spartans cheerleaders has had an amazing year. The Jr. Midgets cheer squad competed at their lo- cal competition and quali- fied to go to the state com- petition where they com- peted against Nor Cal Fed's division 1 and 2, both north and south teams. The cheer squad ended up placing sec- ond at the state competition and also qualified to go to nationals in Las Vegas, which will be Jan. 22-24. The Jr. Midget cheer squad is now practicing and fundraising like mad so they can go and make Red Bluff proud. Going to nationals would not be possible with out all the help and support the girls have received from all the local business here in Red Bluff. If you would like to help support the local girls cheer team, you can go to Go- fundme.com/rbjsjrmidg- etcheer. The champion Jr. Midget cheerleaders consisting of 10- to 12-year-olds are Shelby Arellano, Jaime Bai- ley, Lizzie Cannon, Yasmin Chavez, Camryn Clement, Halle Craytor, Cassandra Criss, Aubree Bachmeyer, Emma Bell, Badegech Dittner, Kadence Fackrell Meier, Patience Felix Jerker, Kirra Ferreira, Luci Fer- reira, Anabel Gonzalez, Lily Morales, Natalie Moore, Alex Torres-Ramos, Alex- andra Strole, Allie VanOr- num, Victoria Clark, Emily Wagner, Abi Zirkle, Nicole Rodriguez-Torres. JuniorMidgetcheerleadersheadingtoVegas REDDING Simpson Univer- sity for Seniors is offering two courses in January for adults of any age. The non-credit, no- homework classes, which begin Jan. 6, are taught on Simpson's campus by uni- versity professors and pro- fessionals in their field of expertise. Classes meet from 10:20-11:20 a.m. Mon- days, Wednesdays and Fri- days. The following courses are being offered: THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST A Study of the Book of Revelation. This course will focus on helping the contempo- rary reader of the book of Revelation to under- stand the bewildering array of images, num- bers and events of John's prophetic visions so as to understand the book's relevance for the past, present and future. Pre- senter will be Dr. Jack Painter. THE AMERICAN INDIANS YOU NEVER KNEW, AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO HISTORY This course will deepen understand- ing of the rise and fall of civilizations in the south- ern region of the west- ern hemisphere. Some of those cultures had stone cities that predated the birth of Christ by 2,000 years and have yet to be discovered. The major fo- cus of this course will be on one of the most pow- erful and spectacular In- dian empires to domi- nate the Americas: the Inca civilization of South America. Presenter will be Dr. David Dummer. Two courses are offered each month through April. The cost is $95 per per- son, per course, or $145 for couples registering for the same course. Reg- ister online with a credit card at simpsonu.edu/se- niorschool. For more information, call Glenn Schaefer at 226- 4146 or Dianne Mueller at 226-4758. SIMPSON UNIVERSITY Classes for seniors offered The program of the Sac- ramento River Discovery Center for Thursday is ti- tled "The Red Bluff Recre- ation Area's Many Winged Visitors" and will feature photographs and observa- tions collected by Dr. Da- vid Dahnke, the leader of the center's Satur- day morning guided bird walks, and Ben Hughes, who serves as the photog- rapher and documents the sightings of our "winged visitors" the first Satur- day of most months of the year. This is the first time this presentation has been available for viewing by the public. The program is being held at the Farm Bureau offices at 275 Sale Lane and will begin at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 40 people and parking is available at the Farm Bu- reau and the Farm Credit parking areas, as south of the Farm Bureau building there is a construction site. After the presentation there will be a question and answer period and an opportunity to enjoy some refreshments. There will opportunities to join or renew your member- ship for 2016 and be part of the many activities that will be taking place during this, the center's 20th year of operations. The Discovery Center has begun fall and winter hours and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or by appoint- ment. The center is at 1000 Sale Lane within the Red Bluff Recreation Area. This a great time of year for planting native plants and the center still has a supply through Dec. 15. Volunteers are needed for seed sorting, plant propagation, garden prun- ing, removal of invasive species and the planting of new areas of the gar- den. The center is seeking assistance of someone to produce an updated Bird Guide for the recreation area and creation of infor- mation centers in the gar- den area. For more information about the volunteer posi- tions, call 527-1196, write to bhughessrdc@gmail. com or stop by and visit. RED BLUFF RECREATION AREA Talk set on area's winged visitors I got a good chuckle when I read today's first reader tip from "Dad." For a split sec- ond there, I could hear my own fa- ther asking the age-old parent/child question: Don't you know how to turn off the light when you leave the room? MOTION SENSOR SWITCHES Apparently, my kids don't know how to turn the lights off, so I have installed motion sen- sor switches in the bath- rooms, laundry room and basement. Installation was very easy, and now those lights turn on and off automatically depend- ing on whether anyone is in the room. This has low- ered our power bill tre- mendously. More than that, our home is a hap- pier place now that dad has stopped harping at the kids to turn off the lights. —Dad HANDY PAINT CONTAINER I was disappointed when my favorite brand of cof- fee began coming in a plastic container instead the familiar metal coffee can. I'd use those empty metal cans for everything, from holding screws and switch plates to soaking paintbrushes. But I discov- ered that the molded han- dle on the new plastic con- tainer made it the perfect container for paint — es- pecially when needing to do a touch-up. The plas- tic coffee "cans" are easy to carry up and down lad- ders, and the plastic lid seals well enough to keep paint fresh until the proj- ect is done. —Johnny BEST PAINT DROP CLOTH Recycle your discarded vi- nyl flannel backed table- cloths. They make great drop cloths for paint- ing. Lay them flannel side up on the floor, and the flannel will absorb all your spills and mishaps. The paint does not seep through the vinyl, sav- ing your floor from paint stains. When painting is complete, hang the cloth outside to dry, hosing or sponging off the vinyl side as necessary. These table- cloth drop cloths last for years and can be used re- peatedly. —Barbara NATURAL ROACH CONTROL This is the most effec- tive treatment I ever found for cockroaches, which I learned from living in Australia's Northern Ter- ritory, where cockroaches are about three inches long and very scary. Take a glass jar with a lid (re- cycle a pickle jar or some- thing similar) and put some peanut butter in the bottom of the jar. Next, put a good smear of vege- table oil around the inside lip of the jar to make it very slippery. The roaches smell the peanut butter, go in after it and can't get out because they slip and fall back into the jar. When the jar has a few roaches in it, apply the lid and place the jar in the sun to kill the roaches. Then throw the whole lot in the garbage. This will effectively reduce the pop- ulation in a short time. If they lay egg cases while they are dying, as they do with traps, it is all con- tained in the jar. When we started doing this, we would have a jar half-full of roaches every morning; after about three weeks, maybe two to three roaches in the jar. Thank- fully, this method substan- tially reduced the popula- tion in our home. —Dawn Would you like to send a tip to Mary?
