This recipe for Ital- ian beef stew is from the 50th anniversary edition of Kern County CattleWom- en's cookbook, "Chuck's On." 2 lbs boneless lean beef — brisket, chuck, flank or round 3 carrots 4 medium size potatoes 3 tablespoons olive oil cup butter 2 oz. salt pork, diced, or bacon lb onions, diced 2 bay leaves, crumbled 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1 teaspoon crumbled rosemary 1 tablespoon flour 2 large garlic cloves, mashed 10 sprigs fresh parsley cup white wine 1 celery stalk with leaves, diced 1 large green pepper, diced 2 cups hot water or broth 1 lb ripe tomatoes, chopped or 3 cups canned tomatoes Instructions: Cut beef into 1 inch cubes. Combine butter, olive oil, and salt pork in heavy skillet, heat. Add onions, bay leaves and brown slowly for 10 min- utes. Add meat cubes, black pepper, rosemary, and brown 10 minutes. Shake flour through sifter and sprinkle meat. Chop garlic and parsley to- gether, add to meat. Stir, cook 4 minutes. Add wine, stir, cover and simmer 10 minutes. Add celery, green pep- per, carrots and pota- toes (chopped or cut into pieces.) Stir, cover, cook slowly for 20 minutes. Add water or broth and tomatoes. Stir well and cook slowly uncov- ered 40 minutes. Salt to taste. Serve with Italian loaf of bread toasted and rubbed with garlic. South Avenue: The Petro Shopping Center in Corning reported a non-injury hit and run about 7:30p.m. Saturday involving a driver in a U-Haul truck and trailer towing a black vehicle. The U-Haul, which hit a truck owned by Market Transport LTD of Portland, was last seen go- ing south on SR 99W. Indecent 800block State Route 99W: Police responded about 8:30a.m. Sunday to Burger King for reports of a transient man standing in the middle of the parking lot with his pants down, exposing himself and yell- ing at patrons. Michael DeWayne Crawley, 50, of Corning was arrested and booked on the charges of indecent exposure, tres- passing and parole hold. Bail was $3,000. Missing Fi h Street: A Corning resident reported Friday evening that a miniature pinscher wearing a black collar with skull and bones was missing from the residence. Suspicious State Route 99W, Corn- ing: Speedco asked for police assistance in picking up a red biohazard bag that had been le between the building and the YakYak Shack Saturday a ernoon. Center Street: A Corning resident called police about 4:30p.m. Saturday to re- port a fight with a neighbor over a dog chasing the mailman. Police logs The Tehama County Li- brary and Tehama County Solid Waste Management Agency will be hosting a Costume Swap again in Oc- tober 2016 and are accept- ing costumes all year. To participate, simply drop off any gently used costumes at the Red Bluff branch of the Tehama County Library during nor- mal business hours. RECYCLE Costume Swap collecting costumes all year The California Depart- ment of Transportation, Caltrans District 2, along with contractor Steve Man- ning Construction, Inc., are suspending construction on State Route 299's Buck- horn Grade for the winter season. Although there won't be daily traffic control between Redding and Weaverville on SR 299, crews will continue to monitor the project for any storm-related or wa- ter quality issues. Be ad- vised, work during the winter season is com- monly weather dependent and lane closures may be ordered with short no- tice. STATE ROUTE 299 Highway project suspended for winter season The Woman's Improve- ment Club had their regu- lar meeting yesterday after- noon in the City Hall. Final arrangements were completed for the card tournament which will be given at the Red Men's Hall on Friday, De- cember 10th.
