Think about it — when you listen to a clas- sic rock or oldies station, you can probably name every song and art- ist, right? How many of those you named are still playing big shows at top concert venues? THAT is the test of time — to be remembered for your classics while you're headlining a brand new tour filled with songs from your new album. Contemporary Christian band Third Day is one of those artists. Straight out of the Southern Rock mecca of the south, the Atlanta-based band came romping into Christian music at a time when their musical style was in a field of ... well ... one. Them. In the mid-90s Third Day's music drew throngs of energetic teens, young adults and southern rock fans to show after show. Stadiums, outdoor festivals and concert halls couldn't get enough of their relent- less guitar-based rock and lead singer, Mac Powell's distinctive voice, but Christian radio wasn't quite ready at the time. One of the most sig- nificant and impacting bands got almost zero radio. That is, until the release of the album, Offerings at the turn of the century. As Offerings made its way into the picture in 2000, the world was treated to songs like "King of Glory," "Your Love O Lord" and "Agnus Dei," which was also recorded and released by Michael W. Smith, a darling of the contemporary music scene at the time. The album proved to be a game changer for Third Day. Suddenly the songs being sung by churches embracing a more modern "praise band" sound in lieu of hymnal-driven piano and organ music, were turning things up a notch on Christian radio, and Third Day was right there in the middle of the pack. The release of Offerings earned the band plenty of radio play, and ultimately changed the minds of many who may have otherwise looked the other way when Third Day tickets went on sale. They grew from the niche following they had enjoyed for a decade to being a multiple award- winning radio and touring band releasing one hit album after another. Fast forward to 2015. Third Day is still touring, still cranking out radio hits, and still rocking fans of all ages. When they roll into Fayetteville's Crown Coliseum on Friday, Nov. 20, they be bringing Brandon Heath — another long-time favorite, and local-boy-does-good, Warren Barfield, who hails from the nearby "Hollerin' Capital of the World" — Spivey's Corner. The result will be a concert on the must-see list for Christian music fans from 12-60 years old, and an unfor- gettable evening of praise, worship and rock 'n roll.
