18 UCW NOVEMBER 11-17, 2015 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CUMBERLAND Deputy Health Director Leadership Fellow The Department of Social Services received four Best Practice Awards at the Social Services Institute in Hickory Oct. 21-23. The department won Best Practice Award for Advancement in Staff Leadership and Development for its annual "Job Swap – Is the Grass Greener on the Other Side?" event. The Cumberland County chapter of the North Carolina Social Services Association (NCSSA) received three awards for efforts to empower others. The awards were for Best Practice in Membership Retention, Innovative Fundraising and Chapter of the Year. DSS Receives 4 Best Practice Awards Department of Public Health Deputy Director Rod Jenkins has been selected as a Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellow for 2015-17. The fellows program is administered by the North Carolina Foundation for Advanced Health Programs. Its purpose is to develop and prepare future leaders to work in and improve the health of rural and underserved communities in North Carolina. Jenkins was notified of his selection in July and has already begun attending required leadership training. The core elements of the program are leadership, partnership, rural life and the N.C. health system. Jenkins, a graduate of The Citadel and the University of South Carolina, has been the county's deputy health director since 2011. Citizens can safely dispose of their unwanted electronic waste at the e-waste drive Saturday in the Cumberland County Courthouse parking lot on Gillespie Sreet from 8 a.m. until noon. Items accepted include televisions under 27 inches, stereos, computers, printers, VCRs, DVD players, radios, lamps, vaccums, small kitchen appliances and video game players. Basically, anything with a cord is accepted. The event is sponsored by Cumberland County Solid Waste, City of Fayetteville, Fayetteville Beautiful and Sustainable Sandhills. The county's solid waste department accepts electronics at all of its convenience centers year round during normal business hours. Jenkins Friends of Library Book Sales Nov. 17 & 22 The Friends of the Cumberland County Library will hold book sales Nov. 17 and Nov. 22 at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. The Nov. 17 sale is from 5 - 8 p.m. and is for Friends of the Library members. Anyone can join the Friends at the sale.The public book sale is Nov. 22 is 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thousands of titles in good condition and low prices are available.
