NOVEMBER 11-17, 2015 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Building Leaders Who Make a Better World by ELAINE COLE ELAINE COLE, FTCC Counselor, Contributing Writer. COMMENTS? Editor@ upandcomingweekly.com. 910.484.6200 The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) began with founder Gary Tuerack's vision of creating a community where like-minded, success-oriented individuals could come together to learn from and support each other. Tuerack struggled in school to overcome a reading difficulty and went on to graduate from an Ivy League college. This demonstrates that if one desires to achieve success, it can be done through focused action and support. The organization's national office is staffed by a leadership team, chapter advisors, and student presidents from across the country. Since the inception of the FTCC Chapter in spring, 2014, 177 members were inducted in May, 2015, and 149 have joined since the fall 2015 semester began. The initial $85 fee to join allows members to experience continuous benefits of membership, such as an online job bank and savings and discounts for a lifetime with no annual dues. Induction means that participants have completed trainings and assessments, have attended speaker broadcasts and have completed their work with their success networking teams. Inducted members understand how to develop their short-term and long-range goals in a supportive, resource-filled, encouraging environment. NSLS is a journey in leadership whereby participants are pushed outside of their comfort zone to grow, develop and accomplish big goals. Most participants understand that NSLS is not a social club, a sorority or fraternity but a professional development opportunity that prepares students to take on leadership roles in the workplace, entrepreneurship, the global community and in life. Members who receive the Engaged Leader Award have fulfilled five hours of service with a non-profit community organization. Volunteerism helps strengthen communities by supporting families, improving schools, giving support for our military and youth and helping to clean and beautify the environment. E-Board and committee members attend a mandatory training retreat that fully explains the responsibilities associated with the board. The Chapter is expected to adhere to the guidelines of FTCC, FTCC SGA and NSLS. Professional coaches who can help guide members through the duties of their roles may be accessed by telephone or online. The chapter uses social networking on Facebook and Twitter and other methods for sharing events and announcements, motivational messages, and relevant material. Speaker broadcasts include world-renowned orators such as those in our Fall 2015 line-up with television host, Al Roker; Leadership Expert, John C Maxwell (October 20), Actor Jesse Eisenberg (November 4), and Actor/Producer John Leguizamo (November 10). Speaker topics and discussions revolve around personal success, leadership, money management, environmental awareness, personal health, and wellness. These events are open to FTCC student body, staff, and faculty. After a student has worked hard to complete the membership requirements, induction is one of the most important next steps. The connection, however, extends beyond Induction, as members continue their journey as leaders. Some Success Networking Team members remain in touch for the long term and function as a group, which helps encourage goal achievement. Through FTCC's Chapter of NSLS, leaders are being built to make a better world. Call or visit FTCC today to learn about the many exciting opportunities available to you.
