AUGUST 19-25, 2015 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM For many, the thought of archery brings the legend of Robin Hood to mind. It conjures up visions of men in tights, running around with their bows and arrows, robbing the rich to give to the poor. That's not exactly an accurate depiction of most archers. In fact, archery is a time-honored skill that dates back centuries. The J. Bayard Clark Park and Nature Center is offering an archery class for youth ages 8 and above on Friday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. "The class is an introduction on how to use compound genesis bows and arrows," said Russell James, archery instructor. "We are going to practice how to get an accurate shot and play a game, as well." James has created his own "Hunger Games" archery in which he puts up balloons and other tar- gets for the participants to hit. The bows can be adjusted to accommo- date a child or an adult. The class is designed to intro- duce the sport of archery to begin- ners. Participants will learn the basics of archery, safety, proper stance and follow through. "We have our safety line and follow a set of rules when it comes to safety and there is a shooting line and a safety area," said James. "Everyone stands in the safety area until they are called up to grab their bows and arrows." James added that there is a proper way to stand when you are shooting the target. Your legs should be spread apart a little bit as you pull the arrow back close to your cheek and keep a nice straight line all the way down to your target. The class also teaches participants the proper way to retrieve an arrow. Clark Park is the city's second largest regional park that was designed to preserve the environ- ment and educate the public about North Carolina plants and wildlife. The Nature Center showcases static displays and wild animals. Rangers conduct events such as nature fairs, astronomy classes, animal print tracking and more. Other events include camping, animal feedings, Saturday Nature Hour and the envi- ronmental mobile unit. Camping is an overnight adventure that a family can enjoy for $10 a day. The camping area includes a fire- ring and an outdoor restroom with a cold shower. Animal feedings include alligators, snakes and turtles eating dinner. This free event is for children of all ages on Wednesdays from 4 – 4:30 p.m. Saturday Nature Hour is a variety of natural history talks, activities and hikes and is free for all ages on Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. The environmental mobile unit is a 24-foot mobile educational trailer that enables rangers to provide outreach programs for schools, com- munity groups and events within Cumberland County. It houses wild- life pelts, skulls, reptile and amphib- ian models and exhibits. The cost is $25. This is free for Cumberland County Public Schools, Fort Bragg Schools and affiliates. The cost of the archery clinic is $5 and adults are welcome. Space is limited so register early. For more information call 433-1579 or visit www.fcpr.us.
