CUMBERLAND co.cumberland.nc.us Parents Reminded of School Immunizations The Cumberland County Department of Public Health reminds parents of middle school students of the updated immunization requirements for students entering seventh grade. The change became effective July 1 and includes the Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV) to protect against meningitis and the Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis Vaccine (Tdap). The health department offers all vaccines for school readiness as well as physicals for children entering kindergarten. The last day for year-round kindergarten and seventh-graders to get their required shots was Aug. 11. The last day for students in traditional calendar schools to attend school without the required shots is Sept. 23. Required vaccines for kindergarten include: DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis); Polio, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella); Hepatitis B and Varicella (chicken pox). Kindergarten students are now required to have a second Varicella shot before school starts. The vaccines are offered at the Immunization Clinic from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Evening clinic hours are also available on Tuesdays until 6:30 p.m. Patients can come into the Immunization Clinic on a walk-in basis; no appointment is necessary. The Health Department is at 1235 Ramsey St. Call 910-433-3633 for more information. Ten youth participated in the 2015 Cumberland County Youth Government Tour held July 21-31. The annual program is sponsored by Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development and provides an opportunity for youth ages 12-13 to visit county departments and receive an overview of county government. The event at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane, will include anime viewing, a gaming tournament, writer's lounge, artist alley, Chibi corner, Manga lounge, CosPlay Runway, the Supernatural Fan Panel, the Carolina Garrison of the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers and more.
