JULY 22-28, 2015 UCW 7 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM The start of school is just around the corner. If you walk down the aisle of your favorite store, you will see not only the latest fashions for back to school, but also a myriad of school supplies. Pencils, folders, lunch boxes and backpacks are colorful reminders that summer is ending. Unfortunately there are some students who will not be able to purchase their school supplies. There are approximately 650 homeless children in the school system this year. These children often come to school ill prepared to learn and unable to do their schoolwork when they get home. As is the case often in Cumberland County, members of the community are stepping up to lend hand through the Cumberland County Register of Deeds annual school supply drive for homeless students. "Our office has coordinated the efforts for these book bags for homeless children for at least six years," said Cumberland County Register of Deeds Lee Warren. "We learned about the school supply drive when one of our senior management team members informed us about the program and how 800 Cumberland County Schools were homeless and it literally broke her heart." Warren added that he had a staff meeting and discussed with his staff how they could help with the collection of school supplies. The office is asking for the following school supplies: notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, notebook paper, composition books, folders, pencil sharpeners, erasers, glue sticks, crayons, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, toothpaste and toothbrush cases. "The citizens of Cumberland County have been very good with supporting the school supply drive," said Warren. "Pope Dental Clinic has been a huge contributor every year. Last year, Bryan Honda was a big contributor," said Warren, adding that there have been a number of departments and businesses that have helped a great deal and he is appreciative. "The good thing is that the number of homeless students is coming down," said Warren. "In an ideal world, we would like to work ourselves right out of a job and like nothing more than there to be no homeless children in the Cumberland County School System." Donated items can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Register of Deeds office in Room 114 at the Cumberland County Courthouse. Gift cards and cash donations will be accepted. Checks will not be accepted. The drive runs through Aug. 3. For more information, call 678-7775 or visit www. ccrod.org.
