This seems an especially fitting designation since Cumberland County's beauty is in full bloom in the month of April. In honor of this beautiful month, here is a recap of a few places in Cumberland County to explore our diverse natural setting. Carvers Creek State Park - located in Spring Lake, Carvers Creek State Park offers an example of the endangered longleaf pine ecosystem. This system is an important habitat for several endangered and protected plant and animal species, most notably the red-cockaded woodpecker. Carvers Creek Park includes Long Valley Farm, the winter estate of James Stillman Rockefeller and a millpond where visitors will likely see waterbirds and turtles. More: www.ncparks.gov Cape Fear Botanical Garden - The 80-acre Cape Fear Botanical Garden has offerings that range from the sculpted beauty of the winter forest to the exuberant masses of summer flowers. Other features include the Heritage Garden Complex, Daylily, Shade and Camellia Gardens. More: www.CapeFearBG.org Lake Rim Park - Located in Western Cumberland County, Lake Rim Park offers a one-mile border trail through the wetlands to Bone Creek. You'll also find plenty of walking trails, a Native American themed garden, natural areas and plenty of playgrounds. More: www.fcpr.us Carvers Falls - Carvers Falls occurs at the intersection of Carver's Creek and McPherson Creek creating a waterfall that is over 150 feet wide and two stories tall. The stone-like formation is known as the "Cape Fear Formation". The two combined creeks are known as Carvers Creek which empties into the Cape Fear River. Carvers Falls is said to be the largest waterfall on the east coast of the Carolinas.
