APRIL 8-14, 2015 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Cape Fear Studios was founded in 1989 with the intent to enrich, educate and involve the community via visual art. One of the ways that it fulfills this ideal is through exhibits such as the Annual North Carolina Faculty/Student Mentor Exhibit that opened March 27 and runs through April 20. "It is how we fulfill our mission statement. Education is part of our mission and when you do what you set yourself up to do, it's something to be proud of," Ann Griffin, the executive director of Cape Fear Studios explained. Art education is an integral part of a well-rounded community. This exhibit specifically encourages the exploration and growth of local young artists and their mentors. It is a great opportunity for the artists, the schools and the community as a whole. It creates a free and open environment for artistic development. "It gives local art education and colleges and universities an opportunity to show off what they are doing. And it shows off the work of professors and students who want to participate. The community can come and see it and the colleges and administration can see what the students are learning," Griffin said. The local schools involved in the show are not limited strictly to Fayetteville, Griffin explained. "This is an annual show that we do with the local colleges and universities. Fayetteville State, Fayetteville Tech, Methodist University, Barton College and Pembroke University are the ones participating this year," she said. The works these students and professors have produced span a range of visual mediums. For example, there is sculpture, drawing, painting and photography. There are, of course, challenges with organizing any exhibit. Due to students being the main focus of the show, there are some specific challenges that go along with organizing this annual exhibit. Griffin explained that the major issue they face is scheduling. "Timing for the students and faculty and their schedules is important. It takes time for them to prepare the art work that they will present so it has to work around their regular schedule. We can't have a show of this nature when they are getting ready for finals," she said. There is no theme for this particular exhibit. The students and professors are encouraged to explore themes that inspire them. This results in a show that covers a wide spectrum of styles and expressions of visual art. "I've always thought that viewing art is a very personal thing. Each person has their own experience," says Griffin. The wide range of themes and styles is guaranteed to create a thought-provoking exhibit for all. This freedom allows for the most honest and creative expressions of artistic talent. This exhibit will remain open until April 20. Cape Fear Studios and Gallery is located at 148 Maxwell St. For more information, visit www.capefearstudios. com or call 910-433-2986.
