18 UCW APRIL 1-7, 2015 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Fayetteville Technical Community College is proud to announce the opening of a Writing and Communication Center at its Fayetteville campus. Organized by Karis King (English and Communication Division Chair and Associate in Arts Co-Chair) and Robert C. Antill (Director of Library Services & Student Learning Center), the Writing Center is a free resource available to all FTCC students. The three primary goals of staff members involved with the Writing Center are to pro- vide supplemental instruc- tion to students throughout the various stages of the writing process, to assist students in utilizing their current skill sets to produce effective pieces of academic scholarship and to empower students to gain a better understanding of the writing process. Using a multidisciplinary approach, instructors at the Writing Center offer assistance to students who need to complete writing assignments across the diverse coursework offered at FTCC—not just writing assignments with English courses. The Writing Center's services include (but are not limited to) assistance with brainstorming, understanding rhetorical goals and strategies, thesis con- struction, organizational strategies, source integration and citation formatting across all disciplinary styles and genres. While offering assistance to students with writing is one important aim, professionals involved at the Writing Center also work to empower students in becoming more comfortable with the process of collegiate-level writing during their academic endeavors and beyond. Located inside the Harry F. Shaw Virtual College Center in Room 235, the Writing & Communication Center is currently staffed with five Writing Lab instructors who serve the FTCC student population. The Writing Center's hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students can also be seen on a walk-in basis for 20-min- ute sessions. During these sessions, the student and Writing Center instructor will be able to address concerns unique to each student's assignment. Staff members at the Writing Center ask that students bring their assignments with them to the sessions to ensure the greatest level of productivity. Effective writing is important not only in the academic environment but also in the workplace and even with personal, everyday communications. The need for employees with good writing and communication skills will always exist and will likely only increase, as many top executives have noted that writing is among the most valued skills an employee can offer but a skill often identified as needing improvement in the workplace. The FTCC Writing Center — supported with knowledgeable, caring instructors — provides the best environment for helping students unlock their full potential and excel through knowledge about how to write and communicate effectively.
