Gavin Newsom and other top elected officials in California acknowledge using personal email accounts to conduct government business, and it's not clear if their private exchanges are retained as public records or subject to dis- closure. An Associated Press survey of email use by the state's four legis- lative leaders and eight top elected officers found a loose patchwork of practices under which private electronic conversations while on the job are alternately common- place, infrequent or discouraged. Brown's office says the governor occasionally uses private email to contact staffers, while Superinten- GOVERNMENT RECORDS Surveyfinds state leaders routinely use private email RED BLUFF A Tehama Country Visitor Center employee was ar- rested early Monday morning on suspicion of burglary and at- tempted arson at his place of em- ployment. "If you say the word 'be- cause,'" Kennedy told a packed Performing Arts Center at Red Bluff High School, "instantly you're a scientist. It's that fast." Children and adults alike descended on the PAC at Red Bluff High School, where Ken- nedy and math and science stu- dents hosted the second an- nual Science Show. The show, which was geared toward curious kids, explored concepts in energy, heat, light, sound and pressure. Demonstrations included the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze such objects as flowers and a tennis ball, a look into our solar system, and a down- hill race between condiments — honey beats ketchup and mustard — to name just a few. Along the way, children yelled out hypotheses before experiments were carried out on stage, and left their seats to test concepts for themselves. After setting a pendulum wave device in motion, dem- onstrating kinetic energy through swinging pendulums and patterns, Kennedy told the audience that it could con- tinue the learning experience at home. "Anything that you might see here, check it out online," he said. Kennedy has said the show got its start after he attended a science, technology, engineer- ing and math, or STEM, con- ference, where a presentation was given on a similar event. One of the show's goals is to inspire and wow children in the community, giving cu- rious youngsters a head start before they enter high school.
