ByJosephShufelberger jshufelberger@chicoer.com @JShufelberger on Twitter CHICO The dunks were nu- merous for both the South and the North, but the second-half scoring was decidedly one- sided. The South boys beat the North 108-74 in the 20th an- nual Phil Bryant Northern Sec- tion All-Star Basketball Game on Sunday night at Pleasant Valley High's Varley Gym. Oroville High's Kahliel Wyatt led all scorers with 21 points in the annual game for the section's top seniors in a showcase event featuring col- lege rules with players split up in a North vs. South format. Red Bluff's Joseph Bosetti had 19 points for the South, which pulled away early in the second half thanks to Matt Ur- rutia, playing in his home gym, and Willows' Travis Mendes. Hamilton's Andrew Whitsett added 12 points. Urrutia and Mendes showed some chemistry, scoring 17 of the South's first 19 points after halftime. That spurt expanded a 45-39 advantage at the break into a 64-47 margin. The South outscored the North 63-35 in the second half. Urrutia had two points in the first half but participating in the 3-point shooting contest at the break seemed to get him warmed up for more, and it certainly motivated him. Cen- tral Valley's Deontrey Fuller edged him 8-7 in the final. By Nick Woodard nwoodard@chicoer.com @nwoodard25 on Twitter CHICO For the ninth time in 20 years, the girls basketball South all-stars have bragging rights over their northern counter- parts. The South beat the North 82- 77 Sunday at the 20th annual Phil Bryant Northern Section All-Star game at Pleasant Valley High. The contest, full of seniors, was played by college style with 20-minute halves and featured the event's first 3-point shooting contest during halftime. Durham's Summer Vercruys- sen led a team of area talent with 13 points. Chico's Myki Abrams scored 11, Corning's Gates Fears had 10 and Pleasant Valley's Kristina Joyce had seven points on her home court. Other locals like Willows' Morgan Hughes, Gridley's Elizabeth Osbourn, Paradise's Bailey Bengson and Mercy's Marissa Starman played key minutes in the win under coach Curt Eller of Corning. Vercruyssen paced the offense early, scoring nine points in the first half as the South team jumped to a 16-8 advantage. Vercruyssen said the big scor- ing total was not the game plan. Rather, she credited her team- mates, including fellow Durham All-Star Katherine Freitas, for her success. The setback came Friday night at the hands of a struggling Para- dise team that turned to its ace in hopes of earning a much-needed victory in front of the home crowd on the final day before spring break. Frankie Cleary tamed the Red Bluff bats and guided Paradise to a 12-2 win in five innings, drop- ping the Spartans to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in Eastern Athletic-Sac- ramento River League play. Par- adise improved to 6-5, 2-2 and earned a split with Red Bluff in the league series following an 11-1 loss in Red Bluff Tuesday. The Bobcats also erased a four-game skid since beginning the year 5-1. "From the time we started to warm-up, took our infield (dur- ing) pregame it was clear that we were not going to have a good day," Spartans coach Ryland Sanders said. "(Cleary) did an ex- cellent job, one of the toughest kids we've faced all year." Cleary's effort is nothing new to interim coach Kyle Black and the Paradise staff, saying that the sophomore right-hander is the team's "bulldog." Cleary struck out six Spartans in the first three innings and fin- ished with a four-hitter against a team that came in with six play- ers hitting over .400. "Frankie's fearless on the mound," Black said. "I can send him out there and he'll go till his arm falls off. To be able to have a guy to send out there once a week is huge for us."
