22 UCW MARCH 11-17, 2015 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL If you are reading this article on March 11, it was exactly 150 years ago today that General Sherman entered Cumberland County during the Civil War. Upon entering North Carolina, Sherman took a direct route to his first objective, Fayetteville, and its arsenal, which had been producing munitions for the Confederacy. Before departing on March 14, Sherman ordered the arsenal and other key buildings destroyed. From March 15-16, 1865 Union forces encountered the first organized tactical resistance since entering the Carolinas at the Battle of Averasboro. The action at Averasboro delayed the left wing of Sherman's army, and gave the Confederates a chance during the Battle of Bentonville, one of the final Civil War Battles Want to learn more?
