14 MARCH 11-17, 2015 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM As part of the Fayetteville State University Fine Arts Series, Fayetteville State University is set to host Dancing in the Spirit II: The Griot and Movement A Dance Conference. Running March 12-14 at FSU, the event features a celebration of dance as well as performances and dance workshops for Cumberland County high school dance programs. Master class workshops led by area college dance professors and invited guest artists are on tap. The community wins, as well, with performances that are open to the public throughout the event. FSU Assistant Professor of Performing and Fine Arts Dwight Smith noted that last year's event, Dancing in the Spirit I, was such a hit that it was easy to say yes to a second event and to take the opportunity to build on last year's success. "It was a good dance performance. We had student workshops, but then it was relegated to college students. This year, we decided to bring in high school students from Cumberland County Schools," said Smith. "It is going to be really nice. We have about 78 students so far. Many of the instructors are coming from all over the region. There will be a master class, too" The special guest speaker for this conference is Sabela Grimes from Los Angeles, whom The Los Angels Times calls, "Los Angeles dance world's best kept secret." Grimes is an interdisciplinary artist and educator. He created and continues to cultivate, a movement system that focuses on the methodical dance training and community-building elements evident in black vernacular/street dance forms called Funkamentals. Grimes will present his work in lecture and demonstration workshops for the general public on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Capel Arena. Funkamentals integrates a variety of practical and theoretical perspectives that circulate in Street Dance cultures outside of the academy, and exposes students to specific knowledge systems that rarely enter mainstream academia. Considered an Afro-futurist, Grimes' proactively seeks to magnify and critique contemporary notions of Hip Hop culture and aesthetics. The Ellington-White CDC in collaboration with The Fine Arts Series at Fayetteville State University will present SLIPPAGE and Thaddeus-Wideman Dance in a performance of CANE a responsive environment dancework conceived and directed by Thomas F. DeFrantz, professor of African& African American Studies and Dance, Duke University Dance Program, and creative director of SLIPPAGE Dance Company. CANE was inspired by Jean Toomer's experimental 1923 text of the Harlem Renaissance. This contemporary work explores memories of African- American sharecropping held by a technologically -devised cane fields. The sound environment for this work includes manipulated audio files from the Library of Congress archive of slave narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938. The files are processed through Supercollider and Max to respond to their own recurrences. These voices of memory became actors to interact with the live performers and prepared soundscape for the work. "What is so nice about CANE is that it is technology bound," said Smith. "They have screens and cameras and light and sound that are all tied into movement." The performance is on Friday at 11 a.m. for students and at 7 p.m. for the general public at Seabrook Auditorium.
