Before the then-named Methodist College opened to it s f irst class in 1960, secular and religious communit y leaders gathered pledges and donat ions f rom the local communit y for a small, private, liberal ar t s college that would be built in Fayet tev ille. In 1956, the Fayet tev ille College Foundat ion, which was renamed the Methodist Universit y Foundat ion, pledged to raise an annual cont ribut ion of $50,000. For most years as far back as 1968, the second Tuesday in Februar y has ser ved as Loyalt y Day, a communit y f undraising event . This year 's Loyalt y Day w ill be Feb. 24, and the goal is to raise $175,000 for st udent scholarships. The k ickof f was held earlier this month at the Fayet tev ille Regional Chamber 's Cof fee Club on Jan. 15. This year 's Loyalt y Day chair is Tim R ichardson of First Cit izens Bank . Being a member of the United Methodist Church, Tim grew up k now ing about Methodist Universit y being a key component of the Church's Nor th Carolina Conference. A f ter he moved here several years ago, he gained an appreciat ion for the cult ural and educat ional at t ributes Methodist brings to the communit y. "I am honored to ser ve a second term as the 2015 Chairperson of Methodist Universit y 's annual Loyalt y Day f und drive for st udent scholarships," R ichardson said. " Ver y few places can claim inst it ut ions like Methodist Universit y as a par t of their communit y. Our f inancial commit ment for a st rong st udent body suppor t s Methodist Universit y cont inually grow ing as a cult ural, educat ional and economic jewel in the communit y." Linda Gof f, Fayet tev ille nat ive and f inancial adv isor for Morgan St anley, is this year 's president of the Methodist Universit y 's Foundat ion Board. "It is amazing to see the dedicat ion of the volunteers that call on the communit y to suppor t the Universit y," Gof f said. "Their commit ment, as well as the long st anding donors, rings t rue to the annual campaign, some over 30 years; that is loyalt y. We are proud the communit y cont inues to invest in t he f ut ure." Though Loyalt y Day was originally about raising f unds to help the college operate, in 2005, the focus shif ted to st udent scholarships, something that MU dedicates more than 26 percent of it s budget to each year. With more than 95 percent of Methodist Universit y st udent s receiv ing f inancial aid, many st udent s would not be able to at tend the universit y w ithout scholarships like the ones f unded through Loyalt y Day. In the 2013-2014 academic year, MU awarded $20.3 million in f inancial aid to st udent s.
