In the wake of the storm, much of the Atlantic Seaboard from Florida to New England will be sunny. Gusty winds and blowing and drifting snow are forecast to subside in New England as the day progresses. Chilly air will hold over much of the eastern third of the nation, while a wedge of mild air pokes northward into the Central states. Some snow will begin to move southeastward along the Canada border of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Rain showers are in store for the northern Rockies. The storm punched out a 40-to-50-foot section of a seawall in Marshfield, Mas- sachusetts, badly damaging a vacant home. In Newport, Rhode Island, it toppled a 110-foot replica of a Revo- lutionary War sailing vessel as the ship lay in drydock, breaking its mast and punc- turing its hull. The blizzard's force and relentlessness stunned even winter-hardened New Eng- landers. "It's a wicked storm," Jeff Russell said as he fought a mounting snowdrift that was threatening to cover one of the windows of his home in Scarborough, Maine. The snow in New Eng- land began Monday eve- ning, continued all day Tuesday and was not ex- pected to ease until late evening. And the bitter cold could hang on: The low temperature Wednes- day is expected to be 1 de- gree, and forecasters said the mercury will not climb above freezing for the next week or so. Much of the Northeast — particularly the Philadel- phia-to-Boston corridor of more than 35 million peo- ple — had braced for a de- bilitating blast Monday eve- ning and into Tuesday af- ter forecasters warned of a storm of potentially historic proportions. The weather lived up to its billing in New England and on New York's Long Is- land, which also got clob- bered. National Weather Service director Louis Uc- cellini said the storm may prove to be one of the big- gest ever in some parts of Massachusetts. But in the New York City area, the snowfall wasn't all that bad, falling short of a foot. By Tuesday morning, buses and subways were up and running again, and driving bans there and in New Jersey had been lifted. The glancing blow left forecasters apologizing and politicians defending their near-total shutdown on travel. Some commut- ers grumbled, but others sounded a better-safe-than- sorry note and even ex- pressed sympathy for the weatherman. "I think it's like the situa- tion with Ebola: If you over- cover, people are ready and prepared, rather than not giving it the attention it needs," said Brandon Bha- jan, a security guard at a New York City building. Uccellini told reporters that the weather service should have done a better job of communicating the uncertainty in its forecast. In New England, nearly 21 inches of snow coated Boston's Logan Airport by early afternoon, while nearby Framingham had 2½ feet and Worcester 26 inches, according to unof- ficial totals. The town of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, reported 33 inches. At least 30,000 homes and businesses were with- out power in the Boston- Cape Cod area, including the entire island of Nan- tucket. A 78 mph wind gust was reported on Nantucket, and a 72 mph one on Martha's Vineyard. "It felt like sand hitting you in the face," Bob Pa- glia said after walking his dog in Whitman, a small town about 20 miles south of Boston. The Associated Press VISALIA Prosecutors say a Central California man who set his wife on fire last year has been sen- tenced to 20 years to life in prison. Eugene Bruno of Visalia pleaded guilty last month to attempted murder, ag- gravated mayhem, torture, corporal injury to a spouse and assault with a flamma- ble substance. The Tulare County dis- trict attorney's office said the 49-year-old received the maximum penalty at the sentencing Monday. 20 YEARS TO LIFE Man sentenced for setting wife on fire The Associated Press ALIQUIPPA, PA. A woman has been ordered to stand trial on charges she stole a police cruiser and led of- ficers on an 80 mph chase — all while her hands were cuffed behind her. Center Township police testified at Roxanne Rim- er's preliminary hearing Monday that she was ar- rested after stealing ear- rings from a Kohl's store Jan. 14. Police testified that a loss prevention offi- cer detained the 27-year- old Rimer, who appar- ently gave a fake name and claimed to be a juve- nile. Before police could arrive, Rimer ran away and jumped into a car driven by her grandfa- ther, police said. That car was pulled over moments later, and Rimer was re- moved, handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a police cruiser, scream- ing, "Mommy! Mommy!" authorities said. Police don't believe the grandfather knew of the shoplifting allegation. Officers say while police were searching her grand- father's car, the thin Chip- pewa Township woman squeezed through an opening in a partition in the car that wasn't latched and crawled into the front seat. She zoomed off, smash- ing into her grandfather's car as she drove away, still handcuffed, police said. Rimer led officers on a nearly 10-mile chase, weaving in and out of traf- fic, before she crashed into a hillside and jumped out of the car, police said. District Judge James DiBenedetto ordered her to stand trial on charges including aggravated as- sault, reckless endanger- ment, fleeing and eluding police, and robbery.
