ByMarilynAdams Thekeytoforgiving those who have hurt you, is to understand how you are forgiven. Ephesians 1:7-8 says, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound to- ward us in all wisdom and prudence." Another ver- sion says, "...which He lav- ished upon us." Jesus Christ shed His blood so you could have forgive- ness for all your sins; past, present, and future. Ephesians 4:32 tells us to forgive as we have been forgiven. Colossians 3:13 says, "Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do." We have been forgiven totally and unequivocally. That means that we are to for- give others without reser- vation. We are not to hold something against another in our heart. Psalm 103:12 says, "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgres- sions from us." The east and the west never meet. It is a perfect illustration of God's forgiveness for us, and how we are to forgive. Matthew 18:21-35 is a parable about forgiving. In verse 21 Peter asked Je- sus how often he was sup- posed to forgive a brother when that brother kept sinning against him. Peter asked Him if seven times was enough. Jesus an- swered in verse 22, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven." Je- sus gave the par- able to help them understand the critical impor- tance of a forgiv- ing heart. Verse 33 says, "Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?" Truth is, an unfor- giving heart is a bondage on the one needing to for- give. Here is something to consider in your forgive- ness. Jesus had compas- sion on you. Shouldn't you show the same compas- sion? We were bound in sin without hope. He set us free through His for- giveness. Forgiveness speaks of God's generosity. He freely forgave us. He wants us to forgive with generosity. Forgiveness breaks chains wrapped around our heart, and at the same time tears down the bar- riers we have built. Where there was enmity, love is free to flow. Where there was withdrawal, a new closeness is developed. The old is passed away. The slate of written offenses is wiped clean. Amos 3:3 says, "Can two walk to- gether, unless they are agreed?" Hearts cannot be knit together without for- giveness. This is God's de- sire and design in relation- ships. An unforgiving atti- tude creates friction and results in superficial rela- tionships. There is no open heart to heart communica- tion. Families are divided, and feuds ostracize. Walk- ing on eggshells is uncom- fortable to ev- eryone involved. Lacking the spirit of forgiveness de- stroys our phys- ical well be- ing, as many dis- eases are rooted in offenses unfor- given. If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, then your paid-for forgiveness has not been received. Forgiveness is a gift that must be received to make it your own. Sal- vation is believing and re- ceiving God's gift of eter- nal life. Romans 10:13 says, "For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:9- 10 says, "That if you con- fess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one be- lieves unto righteousness, and with the mouth con- fession is made unto salva- tion." Forgiveness is essen- tial to receiving that righ- teousness; unforgiveness blocks access to Christ in our hearts. Receiving His forgiveness for our sins, al- lows us to forgive others as we have been forgiven. MarilynAdamsaccepted the Jesus Christ as her per- sonal Savior in 1958. A de- bilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into an intimate re- lationship with Him. He taught her timeless truths that sustain her, and still permeate her present teachings. GOD TALK A lesson about forgiveness Adams By Dick Chamberlin St. Andrew's Episcopal Church is reportedly the oldest continuously func- tioning church in Corning. It began services in 1893 and the building itself came along 10 years later. It started as a mission church and over the years has con- tinued in that status, never having become a regular parish church. The church building was erected on land donated by the Maywood Colony, a de- velopment company which had subdivided the Corn- ing area. The basic shell of the building was completed in 1903 at a cost of $885 with its only piece of furniture a prayer desk. It was a sturdy shell though with fine siding of clear lumber, far more com- mon than now. Even door and window coverings were improvised. Chairs sufficed as pews. It had to wait un- til 1905 for its first coat of paint. Over the years St. An- drew's kept going, not growing significantly nor falling away either. Sunday services are at 10 a.m. at 820 Marin St., the corner of First and Marin streets. All are welcome. For more information, call Charles Rouse at 824- 2311. HistoryofCorning'soldestchurch ST.
