Roundup FROM PAGE 1 Aoki, 33, hit .285 with a home run, six triples, 22 doubles and 43 RBIs over 132 games in his lone sea- son with the Royals after two in Milwaukee. He also stole 17 bases. In addition, right-hander Yusmeiro Petit agreed to a $2.1 million, one-year con- tract that avoided salary arbitration. Petit earned $845,000 last season. Manager Bruce Bochy has said Petit — a talented starter and dominant long man — might remain in the bullpen to begin next sea- son because of his versatil- ity. Petit set a major league record last season by retir- ing 46 consecutive batters over eight appearances from July 22 to Aug. 28. Petit entered in the 12th inning of a 2-1, 18-inning win at Washington in Game 2 of the NL Division Series and threw six shut- out innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven for the win. He went 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in four appearances while pitching in his first postseason. The Venezu- elan star became the first relief pitcher to win three games in one postseason while going at least three innings in each appear- ance and not allowing a run. Giants FROM PAGE 1 the fact that there are key pieces to build the roster around, most notably quar- terback Derek Carr. There is plenty of build- ing to be done. Del Rio be- comes Oakland's ninth head coach since the start of the 2003 season. The Raiders have the NFL's worst record in that span, having failed to produce a single winning season or playoff berth. "I think there's certainly no other way to trend from where we're sitting right now," Del Rio said. "We have to go up." This is the second full- time coach hired since Mark Davis and McKen- zie took over the organiza- tion following the death of longtime owner Al Davis in October 2011. Mark Davis hired McK- enzie as his GM after that season and let McKenzie pick his first coach in Den- nis Allen. That choice did not work out as the Raid- ers went just 8-28 under Al- len before he was fired four games into the 2014 season. Mark Davis was much more involved this time around and interviewed Del Rio by himself nearly two weeks ago and came away immediately im- pressed despite his previ- ous inclination to hire an offensive-minded coach. Del Rio is a former line- backer and longtime de- fensive assistant but he also spent nine seasons as head coach in Jacksonville. "When we met and he dissected the Raiders ros- ter and was able to tell me about each offensive player and tell me how they ranked and how they did was pretty amazing to me, that he had just spent a whole season up in Denver but knew our offensive ros- ter as well as anybody," Da- vis said. "That showed me he's ready to do this." Del Rio then came in for a second interview this week with Davis, McKen- zie, Hall of Fame coach John Madden and other team officials and won over the rest of the organization. Before talking to Del Rio, McKenzie had not found a candidate he felt would be better than in- terim coach Tony Sparano. That changed once he talked to Del Rio. "It was obvious, OK, this is going to be our guy," McKenzie said. "That's the way it went. I thought all of these guys, I thought Tony, did his interview for 12 weeks. It kind of showed. So everybody I talked to had to measure up. And I finally got a chance to in- terview Jack." Del Rio has been defen- sive coordinator in Denver for the past three seasons, helping the Broncos win three straight AFC West titles. Denver ranked third in total defense and tied for 16th in scoring defense this past season. The Bron- cos were third in total de- fense and 10th in scoring defense in Del Rio's three years with the team. Before that, he was head coach in Jacksonville for nine seasons. Del Rio had a 68-71 regular-season re- cord with the Jaguars and made the playoffs in 2005 and 2007, winning one playoff game in his second postseason trip. He was fired with five games re- maining in the 2011 season. "You have an idea as a young coach of what you think it would be and then the reality of being a head coach sets in," Del Rio said. "I think there's been tre- mendous growth. It also was very beneficial that after being a head coach to get the past three years to go back and be a coordi- nator in a successful group because I was able to see things in a different per- spective." Del Rio FROM PAGE 1 second quarter, Westbrook went for a hard throw- down and missed, but the ball bounced straight up in the air and in to give the Thunder a 53-51 lead. They scored the next five points to push their advantage to seven. Oklahoma City in- bounded the ball with 0.1 seconds left in the first half, and Steven Adams was fouled by Justin Hol- iday on a tip attempt. Ad- ams made the first free throw and missed the sec- ond, but Westbrook flew in and tipped the ball at the buzzer to give the Thunder a 69-60 lead. Warriors coach Steve Kerr didn't like the call that put Adams at the line, and he was tagged with a technical foul for arguing. Golden State personnel re- strained him as the team left the court. A nt hony Mor row drained a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer to put the Thunder ahead 98-91. Ibaka scored 14 points in the fourth, and the Thun- der remained in control the rest of the way. Tip-Ins Warriors: C Andrew Bogut and F Andre Iguo- dala sat out to rest. ... Spei- ghts started for just the eighth time this season. ... Draymond Green had four steals. Thunder: Kendrick Per- kins was issued a techni- cal foul in the first quarter.
