4B Daily News – Friday, October 7, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Obama to GOP: Do something on jobs or voters will send you packing WASHINGTON (AP) — Defiant and frustrated, Presi- dent Barack Obama aggressively challenged Republicans Thursday to get behind his jobs plan or explain why not, declaring that if Congress fails to act ''the American people will run them out of town.'' The president used a White House news conference to attempt to heighten the pressure he's sought to create on the GOP by traveling around the country, into swing states and onto the home turf of key Republican foes including House Speaker John Boehner and Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Giving a bit of ground on his own plan, he endorsed a new proposal by Senate Democrats to tax millionaires to pay for his jobs program. ''This is not a game,'' he said. Obama made no apologies for his decision to abandon seeking compromise with Republicans in favor of assailing them, sometimes by name. He contended that he'd gone out of his way to try to work with the GOP since becoming pres- ident, reaching hard-fought deals to raise the government's borrowing limit and avert a government shutdown, and had gotten nothing in return. ''Each time, what we have seen is games playing,'' the president said. ''I am always open to negotiations. What is also true is they need to do something.'' Jobs mourned around the world by Apple devotees Steve Jobs was mourned around the world Thursday through the very devices he conceived: People held up pic- tures of candles on their iPads, reviewed his life on Macin- tosh computers and tapped out tributes on iPhones. One day after his death, two days after Apple introduced the latest incarnation of a touch-screen phone that touched pop culture, sadness and admiration poured out — not for a rock star, not for a religious figure, but for an American cor- porate executive. ''He was a genius,'' Rosario Hidalgo said outside an Apple Store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan while her daughter, 21-month-old Carlotta, used an iPhone to play an app that teaches children to match animal sounds to animal pictures. By people who have grown up in a world where iPod headphones are as ubiquitous as wristwatches were to a pre- vious generation, Jobs was remembered as their Elvis Pres- ley or John Lennon. Perhaps even their Thomas Edison. ''It's like the end of the innovators,'' said Scott Robbins, 34, who described himself as an Apple fan of 20 years and who rushed to an Apple Store in San Francisco when he heard the news. Record-high one-third of the unemployed have been out of work for more than a year WASHINGTON (AP) — For more Americans, being out of work has become a semi-permanent condition. Nearly one-third of the unemployed — nearly 4.5 million people — have had no job for a year or more. That's a record high. Many are older workers who have found it especially hard to find jobs. And economists say their prospects won't brighten much even after the economy starts to strengthen and hiring picks up. Even if they can find a job, it will likely pay far less than their old ones did. The outlook is unlikely to improve on Friday, when the government issues its monthly jobs report. Economists pre- dict it will show that employers added a net 56,000 jobs in September. That's far fewer than needed to reduce unemployment. The unemployment rate is expected to remain 9.1 percent for a third straight month. Obama asserts Republicans have not explained their stance on jobs bill; they have WASHINGTON (AP) — In challenging Republicans to get behind his jobs bill Thursday, President Barack Obama argued Republicans have supported his proposals before, demanded that they explain themselves if they oppose him, and challenged others to come up with a plan of their own. The rhetoric in the president's quick-moving press confer- ence dodged some facts and left some evidence in the dust. OBAMA: ''If it turns out that there are Republicans who are opposed to this bill, they need to explain to me, but more importantly to their constituencies and the American people, why they're opposed, and what would they do.'' THE FACTS: While Republicans might not be cam- paigning on their opposition to Obama's plan, they've hard- ly kept their objections a secret. In a memorandum to House Republicans Sept. 16, House Speaker John Boehner and members of the GOP leadership said they could find common ground with Obama on the extension of certain business tax breaks, waiving a payment withholding provision for federal contractors, incentives for hiring veterans, and job training measures in connection with unemployment insurance. They objected to new spending on public works pro- grams, suggesting instead that Congress and the president work out those priorities in a highway spending bill. And they raised concerns about Obama's payroll tax cuts for workers and small businesses, arguing that the benefits of a one-year tax cut would be short-lived. The memo also point- ed out that reducing payroll taxes, which pay for Social Security, temporarily forces Social Security to tap the gov- ernment's general fund. And it opposed additional spending to prevent layoffs of teachers, police officers and other pub- lic workers. Giffords attends retirement ceremony for husband WASHINGTON (AP) — Looking thrilled to be among friends and colleagues, Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to Washington on Thursday to attend a Navy retire- ment ceremony for her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly. The visit marks the Arizona congresswoman's second trip to the nation's capital since she was shot in the head last January while meeting with constituents in Tucson. About 30 people, including Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, greet- ed her and Kelly with a standing ovation as they entered the Secretary of War suite at the Eisenhower Executive Building next to the White House. Giffords walked slowly and with a noticeable limp, wearing running shoes with her suit, but she looked overjoyed to see some of her fellow lawmakers again. Vice President Joe Biden emceed the ceremony, which included awarding Kelly two of the military's highest awards. Biden had a little trouble pinning the Legion of Merit on Kelly and blamed it on the dim lighting, but Gif- fords stepped up and had no trouble whatsoever pinning the Distinguished Flying Cross on her husband. ''Gabby did it better than I did,'' Biden said as the audi- ence laughed and applauded. Biden made note of Giffords appearance and her near- constant smile, telling her, ''You look good, Gabby.'' 60 percent rise in children's trips to ERs for concussions from sports, recreation ATLANTA (AP) — The number of athletic children going to hospitals with concussions is up 60 percent in the past decade, a finding that is likely due to parents and coach- es being more careful about treating head injuries, according to a new federal study. ''It's a good increase, if that makes any sense,'' said Steve Marshall, interim director of the University of North Caroli- na's Injury Prevention and Research Center. ''These injuries were always there. It's not that there are more injuries now. It's just that now people are getting treat- ment that they weren't getting before,'' said Marshall, who was not involved in the new research. Bicycling and football were the leading reasons for the kids' brain injuries, but health officials said that could be at least partly related to the popularity of those activities. For example, it's possible many more kids bike, so a larger num- ber of bike-related injuries would be expected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study is based on a survey of 66 hospital emergency departments that was designed to be nationally representative. The CDC looked at non-fatal data for the years 2001 through 2009 for kids and teens ages 19 and younger. Nobel Prize in literature goes to psychologist turned poet STOCKHOLM (AP) — The Nobel Prize in litera- ture was awarded Thursday to a psychologist who used his spare time to craft sparsely written poems about the mysteries of everyday life — commuting to work, watching the sun rise or waiting for nightfall. Tomas Transtromer, Sweden's most famous poet, had been a favorite for the prize for so many years that even his countrymen had started to doubt whether he would ever win.
