Donations may be mailed to First Church of God, 1005 S. Jackson St., Red Bluff. National Cathedral damaged The 5.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked the East Coast Tuesday damaged one of Washington's architectural treasures, the National Cathedral. The cathedral, a popular stop for visitors to the nation's capital, is closed while authorities inspect the damage. The damage occurred at the cathedral's "Gloria in Excel- sis" central tower. Three of four pinnacles, or corner spires, on the central tower suffered damages, according to a state- ment released to the media, and three finials (capstones shaped like fleurs-de-lys) snapped off. "Similar decorative elements on the cathedral's exterior also appear to be damaged. Cracks have appeared in the fly- ing buttresses around the apse at the cathedral's east end, the first portion of the building to be constructed, but the but- tresses supporting the central tower seem to be sound," says the statement. There has been no damage reported to the stained-glass windows. Heart barriers A barrier is an obstacle that pre- vents access. We put barriers into place when we trophy our emotional pain. We often fall into self-deception when we put barriers around our heart through self-protective measures. We think we are burying the pain, but it can become our identity. It not only affects our mental state, but it can affect our physical bodies as well. Psalm 31:9-10 says, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trou- ble; my eye wastes away with grief, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away." These verses are saying that the eyes are affected, as well as the bones and strength. The Book of Proverbs talks about a crushed spirit, or a broken spirit. Proverbs 18:14 says, "The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?" Proverbs 15:13 says, "A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is bro- ken." Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." These verses reference how we are being affected by emotional pain. Our spirits can be broken when crushed by life's difficulties, often leading to depres- sion. Rejection creates deep emotional scars. It can affect everything we do and say if we allow it. Jesus was cru- elly rejected. He understands how we feel. He died on the cross bearing the pains of the ones who sinned against us. Listen to His healing words in Isaiah 43:1, "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine." Nothing we go through is in vain. He will redeem it all. If I was to ask you: "Who hurt you?" what would your answer be? Have you built walls around your heart so you won't be hurt again? The only healing for a wounded heart comes through forgive- ness. We need to forgive the ones who have caused the emotional scarring, but only the Lord Jesus can bring the deep healing that is needed. He says in Luke 4:18 that He has come to heal the broken hearted. Have you been broken down by trauma or oppression? Have you been crushed by your circumstances? Do you feel downtrodden and as if there is no hope? You will find healing when you yield to the deep work that Jesus so freely gives. Announcement. You do not have to be a victim. You can be a victor. I Corinthians 15:57 says, "But thanks be Prayer Rally Sunday August 28th 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM @RBUHS Stadium Field Sponsored by the Red Bluff Ministerial Association (MCT) — Why do people pray during disasters when God probably caused them? GOD IS NOT THE CAUSE The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: I don't believe there is an old man with long white hair and beard sitting on a throne somewhere in the far off reaches of the universe point- ing his finger down at the Earth and demanding a flood, tornado, earthquake or tidal wave take place. God does- n't cause disasters. Join community leaders, school administrators, teachers, students and parents as we pray for a safe and successful 2011-2012 Academic School Year for all our area schools. See you on the field at 6:00 PM Natural disasters are not evil or a failure of God. Earthquakes are a part of the processes that keep the Earth living and suitable for life. Tornadoes are formed when contrasting walls of air meet and swirl together. Because we have paved thousands of acres of earth as well as drained wetlands, straightened rivers and built shoddy containment structures that fail, many floods occur. There are natural disasters; There are natural dis- asters caused by man; There are no natural disasters caused by God. People pray because it is the most effective way to express their care, concern, hope, love and desired out- come for others. It is something a person can do when feeling helpless in every other way. Prayer does have an effect, and it keeps us from imagining the most horrif- ic possibility. Prayer is the sacred touch that turns worry, fear and anxiety into strength, confidence and courage. to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 8:37 says, "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." Marilyn Adams GodTalk We need to forgive those who have caused the emotional scarring. It says in Colossians 3:13, "Bearing with one anoth- er, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against anoth- er; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do." We forgive with the same forgiveness that we received. If you have never accepted what the Lord Jesus did for you on the cross, today is the day. Tell Jesus that you are a sinner, and ask Him to come into your life to be your Lord and Savior. Romans 10:13 says, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Receive His salvation and healing for your broken life. Marilyn Adams is a prolific writer and minister to women and to prisoners. She has received great healing in her life and she ministers what she has been given. Voices of Faith: Why do people pray during disasters? SUFFERING IS A MYSTERY The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kansas City: Catholics understand that God per- mits many things in life, the consequences of creation's free interaction. That is, God's permissive will allows natural disasters. As for why particular storms assail us — natural, manmade or otherwise, the Christian accepts that this will often remain a mystery. The Psalms are a particularly good place to seek words that express this common denominator of humanity: the mystery of suffering. In the Psalmist's words, we find sol- idarity through the voice of one who also knows the storms of life and who verbalizes that mix of uncertainty and trust. We experience great trial, distress and fear, and yet in spite of the maelstrom in our midst, I and others believe that all falls under God's watchful, providential care. Christians profess that Jesus Christ is the safeguard of this truth: the promise, in flesh and blood, that God does not abandon us in moments of distress, but enters our con- dition to see us through into new life. We profess that God is intimately concerned with each and every person he cre- ates. Prayers during natural disasters are, in many ways, a signal of hope that God's permissive will is not haphazard or unaware. Rather, prayer during a natural disaster recog- nizes that even when we don't understand why these events occur, we confidently trust that God can bring us through.
