The season opener for both schools was marred by dozens upon dozens upon dozens of penalty flags. The majority went against the Yellowjackets and also provided the saving grace for the Bulldogs in the form of glimpses of rest. Just minutes into the second half, Los Molinos lost their athlet- ic star Dom Ceja to injury and were forced to play the rest of the game with just 11 players. The Bulldogs trailed only 6-0 at halftime, but the exhaustion caught up with them in the second half as their offense found difficulty mov- ing the ball. Los Molinos netted eight yards of offense in the sec- ond half. Ceja finished as the team's lead- ing rusher with 22 yards on seven carries. Williams' quarterback Ben Mayes completed 6-of-19 passes for 124 yards, but three went for touchdowns. One went to Max Santos and a pair to Erik Knight, who finished with three catches for 74 yards. Antonio Boites added 120 yards on the ground on 16 carries for the Yellowjackets. It could have been worse for the Bulldogs. The Yellowjackets had two touchdowns called back for penal- ties and turned the ball over three times in the end zone, including a fumble into the Los Molinos end zone. While the score and lack of offensive production weren't pret- ty, Los Molinos coach George Wil- son had every reason to tell his Bulldogs' he was proud of their effort. "We outplayed them in the first half — just two long passes," Wil- son said afterward. The first long pass of the game proved to be critical, when on the Yellowjackets' second possession of the game Knight burnt the Los Molinos secondary on a post rout to score a 63-yard touchdown reception. Behind Ceja, Edward Garnica and Trevor Morton the Bulldogs were finding some success moving the ball in the first quarter, but twice their drives stalled when they missed a fourth down by sure inch- es. Williams didn't help itself out with their constant parade of penalties and the Bulldogs' defense kept the game 6-0 headed into the half. The Yellowjackets' started the second half with a pair of turnovers, but the Bulldogs' offense without Ceja couldn't take advantage. Midway through the third quar- ter Williams took over the ball at the Bulldogs' 40-yard-line follow- ing a punt. Behind Boites the Yel- lowjackets moved the ball down to the Los Molinos 15, before once again penalties took their toll. Consecutive flags backed them up the 30-yard-line, but for the first time in the game Williams' over- came their self-induced troubles when Mayes found Santos down the right sideline for a touchdown. Williams then took control of the game on their next possession when they marched 43 yards and Boites popped in a touchdown run from two yards out. The conversion attempt fol- lowing the touchdown would have to be played four times before it happened penalty-free. Williams' didn't convert. Boites and Knight hooked up on a 10-yard touchdown pass on Williams' final possession game of the game. The Division-III Yellowjackets (0-1), who were playing down a division against Los Molinos, will have their work cut out for them next week when they host defend- ing Division-IV champion Maxwell. Assuming Los Molinos (0-1) can keep enough players healthy to continue their season, the Bulldogs will host Portola. "If we're going to play, we're going to play hard," Wilson said.
