F CUSOn Electronic Waste Recycling City, County, Community Band Together for Tornado Recovery Efforts The City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, volunteers and state and federal agencies banded together to get the community back on its feet after Fayetteville and Cumberland County were ravaged by tornadoes Saturday, April 16. Hundreds of homes were damaged, many of them destroyed, in the Yadkin and Reilly road areas, the Ramsey Street and Andrews Road areas and in Linden and Beaver Dam. City and County departments assisted in the recovery efforts, including: Fire Departments from the City and County, City Police, Emergency Services, Parks and Recreation, Environmental Services, Engineering & Infrastructure, County Solid Waste, Department, Cooperative Extension, Mental Health and various other City and County staff. The County Emergency Operations Center opened at noon on Saturday, April 16. At approximately 1 to 1:30 p.m., Parks and Recreation crews were put on notice to be available for clean-up duty. At 4:30 p.m., the City and County activated a joint EOC in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center. Emergency Management coordinated efforts with the State Emergency Management after states of emergency were declared. continued next page Drive Scheduled for June 18 In an effort to promote waste reduction and support North Carolina legislation prohibiting the disposal of computer equipment and televisions in takes effect on July 1, Fayetteville Beautiful is partnering with the City of Fayetteville and Sustainable Sandhills to host an electronic waste (e-waste) drive and compost bin and within the city limits. Recycle your old electronics at the Westwood Shopping Center (grassy area near All American Freeway, near the cinema) on Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Electronics contain many recyclable materials to include: Plastics, glass and precious metals. If not disposed of correctly, electronics can leach heavy metals, chemicals and other materials that can harm the environment and people’s health. Accepted items include televisions, computers and monitors, computer peripherals, keyboards, printers, scanners, cables, telephones, cellular phones, video games and game systems. Basically, anything is accepted that operates on batteries or has a plug, with the exception of white goods (stoves, refrigerators, air conditioners, washer/dryer, etc.), radioactive material, lamps, batteries and CRT televisions larger than 27-inches. American Greenz, a North Carolina e-waste company, will collect, transport and process the e-waste. As previously announced, Chief Benny Nichols will retire as chief of the Fayetteville Fire Department on July 1, 2011. “This appointment ensures our world-class Fire Department continues to focus on public safety, responsiveness, innovation “Chief Benny Nichols has been asked to focus his attention on coordinating City resources and other agencies involved in the recovery operations phase following the tornadoes disaster. Ben Major has extensive experience and success in a number of strategic leadership roles throughout the Fire Department in his 27 year career with the City of State University (now UNCP). He was promoted to increasingly more responsible positions during his career through assignments in virtually every Fire Department Division.
