INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN I like Charles Evans and I think his free-spirited style and his tendencies to speak up with unbridled passion and compassion for the concerns of Cumberland County residents is somewhat refreshing. However, he surely would benefi t from a class or two in manners and diplomacy. He would also benefi t greatly from emulating the style, class and professionalism of his friend, mentor and spokesperson Troy Williams. Williams, whose current mission in life now seems to be Evans’ “knight in shining armor,” is struggling to explain and defend Evans’ rough-cut behavior as he blunders through the county trying to gain everyone’s attention but earning and nurturing very little respect. Williams’ recent refl ections and reminders of Evans’ past, as refl ected in a recent article in the Fayetteville Observer are no longer relevant or effective, especially when trying to masquerade poor judgment, bad manners and conspicuous grandstanding. All of which were evident in the unfortunate and alleged shoving incident between Evans and Cumberland County Board of Commissioners Chair Kenneth Edge. Eye- witness accounts of that incident had Evans and Edge all square with each other shaking hands and laughing, ready to put the incident behind them and move on. The very next day, Evans shot off a letter and launched another embarrassing assault on our county and community. For what purpose? Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Fayetteville’s Weather Forecast Thursday May 5 Friday May 6 Saturday May 7 Attention? Grandstanding? Sympathy? Fostering a racial divide within our community? This surely isn’t harmony. How can you explain this? Perhaps Evans is just a “front man” dancing like a puppet on the strings of others who have more a sinister motive or agenda? Who knows? I don’t. However, I do know this. Charles Evans is in a good position to help and champion all the residents of this county. Not just the poor and downtrodden that Williams described in his article. Cumberland County residents are not as concerned or preoccupied with Evans’ past as much as Williams is in reminding everyone of it. Matter of fact, the comments I hear about Evans are all focused on what he can accomplish in the future for Cumberland County. This being said, if teamwork, cooperation and racial harmony are his true priorities, then he needs to man up and take control and responsibility for the position he holds. Otherwise, he will be “one and done” just like his short stint with the Fayetteville City Council. Transparency in government works both ways. In time, the people will see right through any deception, and then vote accordingly. Voters do not like deception. Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly.
