Monty Python's "Spama- lot" makes its local area pre- miere at 7:30 p.m. April 30 through May 3 and 2 p.m. May 4 in CSU, Chico's Lax- son Auditorium. This grand-scale, pull- out-all-the-stops show is Chico State's biggest the - atre production of the 2013- 14 school year — its end of year spring musical — and will feature beautiful sets and costumes, an orchestra and the Department of Mu - sic and Theatre's most tal- ented performers. "Spamalot" premiered on Broadway in March of 2005 and subsequently was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning several in - cluding Best Musical. The soundtrack won a Grammy for "Best Musical Show Al- bum." Faculty member Joel P. Rogers, who is directing "Spamalot," said he only has one goal in mind for au - diences walking away at the end of the show. "I hope they have sore muscles in their faces from laughing so much," said Rog - ers. "Spamalot" is a boister- ous comedy-musical loosely based on the 1975 f ilm "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," which itself is a par - ody of the legendary tale of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. The New York Times described the production as, "a resplen - dently silly new musical," and claimed that, "laughs ar- rive even before a scene gets under way." Other reviews have described it as "rais- ing silliness to an art form," and being "zany," "wacky," and "over the top." The story of "Spamalot" follows King Arthur and his servant Patsy as they set off to try and recruit men to join Arthur's Round Table. Un - fortunately, things don't go as smoothly as they hoped and they run into a number of wacky characters includ - ing, but definitely not limited to, the Lady of the Lake and her Laker Girls, the Knights who say "Ni," and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As- Sir-Lancelot. Due to some sexual hu - mor, coarse language and mild violence, "Spamalot" is not recommended for chil- dren younger than 12. Advance tickets, at $20 premium, $16 general, $14 senior citizens, and $10 stu - dents/children, are available at the University Box Office, corner of Third and Chest- nut streets. Tickets are also available online at the Uni- versity Box Office, www. chicostatetickets.com or by phone at (530) 898-6333.
