"This free entry will be in addition to the other scheduled fee-free days which include National Park Service's 98th birth- day on Aug. 25, National Public Lands Day on Sep. 27 and Veterans Day on Nov. 11," said Superinten - dent Darlene Koontz. The fee-free dates do not in- clude other fees for camp- ing, reservations, or use of concessions. "Visitors can enjoy a spring visit during National Park Week at Lassen by hik - ing along some of the lower elevation trails or skiing and snowshoeing in the higher elevations," said Koontz. The 2014 spring highway opening has begun at Las - sen Volcanic National Park. A 10-mile section of the sce- nic highway is open to the Devastated Area to vehi- cle traffic on the Manzanita Lake side of the park. "The road crews are also plowing from the south en - trance and are making ex- cellent progress," Koontz said. "We anticipate open- ing the pa rk highway through the park prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend, but a spring storm could still delay that open - ing." The conditions for the park highway and park trails are updated and avail - able on www.nps.gov/lavo/ planyourvisit/current_con- ditions.htm. Spring can still bring significant snowfall and the highway may be closed for short periods during linger - ing snowstorms. A lthough weather in the valley is mild, visitors should still prepare for winter conditions by dress - ing in layers, bringing sun- glasses, sunscreen, extra water, food, as well as ve- hicle chains and blankets. Visitors need to stay clear of snowplows working in the park as equipment op- erators may be unable to see or hear them. The Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. T he ca nd id ate who raises the most money dur - ing the two-month cam- paign wins the title for a year and a front row seat in the annual Independence Day Parade, a free chamber membership and deep ap - preciation from the town. Beginning in May each year, campaign signs go up. Car washes bake sales and quilt raffles are sched - uled. Poker runs and Cow Chip Bingo are but a few of the fund raising activities. Display racks of canning jars, each jar with a photo of the candidate are placed around town. There's a slit in the lid and money goes in.In addition to the fund - raisers candidates spon- sor, the jars are set out to increase public awareness of the race and generate additional interest. And, of course, additional revenue. The purpose of all this activity is to raise money to cover expenses for the an - nual Independence Day Pa- rade, Play Day in the Park and other chamber activi- ties. Thanks to following your advice over the years, we have paid off our house, and we are currently two car loans from being completely debt-free. Recently my teenage daughter was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer, and the bills are piling up. We are having to travel back and forth to Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville, and we live in South Carolina. Do you know where we can get help with these expenses? There are only a few doctors that treat this kind of cancer. I appreciate your help and advice. Thanks, and God bless. -- Barb, email deAR BARB » Take a look at "Local Organizations and Funds" (childrenshospital. vanderbilt. org/services. php?mid=7786) at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital website. You'll find many resources for families in your situation, including Jade's Fund, which helps families of children undergoing cancer treatment at Children's Hospital with everyday living expenses that typically fall behind when a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, requiring a parent to stop working. I am so sorry you are facing this challenge. deAR MARy » I read in this column about Adella in Minn., whose daughter is looking for college scholarships and loans. I admire anyone who is working two jobs and getting a college education at the same time. Could you give her my email, if she'd like to contact me? I am a member of a philanthropic organization that helps to empower women to get an education. I've learned so much!-- Bev, email deAR BeV » I've forwarded your message and address to Adella, encouraging her to contact you. deAR MARy » It's tax time, and it turns out that for the first time ever I will owe the IRS a lot of money. Should I use my savings to pay my taxes or is there a way to make payments without it being overly, well, taxing? -- Cheryl, Ohio deAR CHeRyl » While the IRS claims to set up payment plans in certain situations, if there is any way you can avoid that, you should. Your taxes should take top priority. Then do whatever it takes to immediately and quickly replenish your savings. This is not a lesson you want to ever have to learn again.
