Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Most people think of one thing when they hear the word track: Running. If you have any interest in my family, you know one thing for sure; we are all about the throwing sports, especially shot put and dis- cus. My daughter Meaggan found what many people never find. Three years ago as a freshman she found that she had a gift for heaving heavy things great distances and she has flung her way into the record books and into the path of colleges look- ing to have her throw her way on to their campus. Track parents are unlike any other sports parents; they are about all kids no matter the school or the stats. Track parents are inclusive, much like the parents of pee wee sports. We share and share alike. If one family has a pop up, you will see many colors sitting under the shade, not just ‘their’ school. Need food? I have never seen the likes of what track parents provide; the spread rivals any tailgate party ever held. Need support? I have yet to hear a parent from any school utter a negative word toward another par- ticipant. It is all about support. One woman is the quintessential track mom; Dom’s Mom. Rebecca Medlin is an amazing woman who is the most organized, most thoughtful and most supportive sports parent I have ever met, and I have been involved in many sports. Need water? She’s got it. Need a blanket? She’s got it. Food? Check. Hand sanitizer? Check. Need an obscure thingy- ma-bob? She’s got that too. The kids know her as Dom’s Mom, the camera toting, green-and-gold wearing, cheering, inspir- ing mother who goes to every meet, no matter the weather or the cost. She puts freezing wet kids in her car and feeds them cup- o-noodles. She single handedly makes sure that there are pictures of all the kids at the year-end track party; even the often for- gotten anchors of the track team- the throwers. If you won’t, don’t or can’t attend your child’s RBUHS track meets, I can tell you this; Rebecca knows your child’s name, feeds them when you send them with no food or money, warms them when they didn’t predict the weather correctly and takes the pictures that tell your child that they mat- ter. She knows what they like to eat and if they need sunblock. Rebecca knows your child’s stats, PR’s and when their event is on. She knows who is allergic to nuts and who prefers gummy worms or apples. She runs back and forth to make sure your child hears encouragement from the side- lines. She will stay at the meet until it is over if your child needs support. Faydra Rector You Matter Maybe you can’t be at the meets. Maybe you don’t think it is impor- tant or that your child needs your support. Thank God that Rebecca sees the value in each and every child. Be like Rebecca, love every child as if he or she were your own. Make an impact on kids so they feel they are valued. It is hard to compete in this day and age. The skills the kids learn in sports will be applied in their adult lives. The kindnesses they experience from parents and coach- es will shape how they treat others when they are parents themselves. Rebecca, You Matter because you are a selfless woman who gives without a second thought and I am proud you bleed green.
