8A – Daily News – Friday, March 11, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Gadhafi forces pound Libyan rebels RAS LANOUF, Libya (AP) — With fierce bar- rages of tank and artillery fire, Moammar Gadhafi’s loyalists threw rebels into a frantic retreat from a strategic oil port Thurs- day in a counteroffensive that reversed the opposi- tion’s advance toward the capital of Tripoli and now threatens its positions in the east. The rout came as the U.S. director of national intelligence stressed that Gadhafi’s military was stronger than it has been described and said that ‘‘in the longer term ... the regime will prevail.’’ Hundreds of rebels in cars and trucks mounted with machine guns sped eastward on the Mediter- ranean coastal road in a seemingly disorganized flight from Ras Lanouf as an overwhelming force of rockets and shells pound- ed a hospital, mosque and other buildings in the oil complex. Doctors and staff at the hospital were hastily evacuated along with wounded from fight- ing from the past week. Terrorism hearing becomes debate over language and religion WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress pushed deep into a raw and emotional debate Thursday over American Muslims who have committed terrorist attacks in the name of religion, in a hearing punctuated by tearful tes- timony, angry recrimina- tions and political theater. Republican Rep. Peter King declared U.S. Mus- lims are doing too little to help fight terror in Amer- ica. Democrats warned of inflaming anti-Muslim sentiment and energizing al-Qaida. Framed by photos of the burning World Trade Center and Pentagon, the families of two young men blamed the Islamic community for inspiring young men to commit ter- rorism. On the other side, one of the two Muslims in Congress wept while dis- cussing a Muslim fire- fighter who died in the attacks. The sharp divisions reflect a country still struggling with how best to combat terrorism near- ly a decade after the Sep- tember 2001 attacks. Al- Qaida has built a strategy recently around motivat- ing young American Muslims to become one- RANDAL S. ELLOWAY DDS IMPLANTS DENTISTRY 2426 SO. King, a New York con- gressman and the new chairman of the House Homeland Security Com- mittee, said he called the hearing because Muslim community leaders need to speak out more loudly against terrorism and work more closely with police and the FBI. Democrats wanted the hearing to focus on terror threats more broadly, including from white supremacists. Dow has worst day since August NEW YORK (AP) — Weak economic news from China, the U.S. and Spain combined with a slump in oil companies sent stocks sharply lower Thursday. The Dow Jones industrial average had its biggest one- day drop since August. Investors were jarred when China reported a sur- prise trade deficit. China’s exports fell in February as businesses closed for the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday, but imports of higher-priced oil and other goods jumped, widening the country’s deficit to $7.3 billion. Moody’s downgraded Spain’s debt, re-igniting fears about Europe’s debt crisis. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 24.91, or 1.9 percent, to 1,295.11. The Dow and S&P 500 are still up 3 percent since the start of the year. Epic defeat in Wisconsin could help union leaders MADISON, Wis. (AP) — With the labor move- ment heading to an epic defeat in Wisconsin and perhaps other states, union leaders plan to use the setback to fire up working people nation- wide and mount a major counterattack against Republicans at the ballot box in 2012. Wisconsin’s measure stripping public employ- ees of most bargaining rights swiftly advanced toward GOP Gov. Scott Walker’s desk Thursday, and he promised to sign it as soon as possible. But labor leaders say the events in Wisconsin have helped galvanize support for unions across the country, and they hope to use the momentum to help fight off the attacks and grow their member- ship.
