Meandering about were a few Dr. Seuss characters to meet stu- dents as well. The librarian, Georgia Scott, enlisted a number of community members in various professions to come and read for the 24 classes. These guest readers were asked to share why literacy is so impor- tant in their profession; emphasizing that knowing how to read is nec- essary no matter what job you are doing. The school had a Dr. Seuss trivia question each day this week for students to answer. On Wednesday, Dr. Seuss prizes were given out to many students who gave the correct answers. Red Bluff High School celebrated National FFA Week recently and each day there was a dress-up day and a lunchtime activity. On Feb. 14, the dress-up day was Red Pink and White Hearts Day in celebration of Valen- tine’s Day, and there was a FFA meeting at lunch. Tuesday was Tractor Day with a lunchtime activity of tractor pull. Wednesday was Ranch Hand Day with a roping contest. Thursday was Camo Day, and the activity was a scavenger hunt. Friday was Blue, Green and Gold Day with kiss the pig as the activity. The FFA held a contest called Kiss the Pig where students put money in jars with teachers’ names on them. The dollars counted as positive points, and the coins counted as negative points. The teacher with the most points had to kiss a pig. Mr. Evans had the most points, so he kissed the pig. Thank you Mr. Evans for being a good sport. The FFA raised a total of $62.50 from this contest, which helped pay for a hot dog feed that was free to students and teachers. The Mathematics Learning Communities grant will pro- vide Jackson Heights School with an opportunity to offer teachers more support, which in turn translates into measur- able increases in the success of students, said Principal Dottie Renstrom. A visit to one of the fourth grade classrooms served by the previous grant revealed a group of students who were engaged and enthusiastic about math. When asked what they think about math, some of the students expressed how challenging math is for them, but added they like learning it through the games and activi- ties that their teacher, Mrs. Vazquez, uses to make it fun. Vazquez credits math coach Sherry Gerrodette for helping her to bring more of those activities to her classroom. School News? The board president, superintendent, high school principal, mayor, retired teachers, parents and even an NFL official came as part of the event. Each member was introduced at an assembly and spent the next 30 minutes reading Dr. Seuss and other favorite literature in classrooms. Ally Madison, the ASB president of Los Molinos Elementary, dressed up as the Cat in the Hat and handed out gifts commemorating Dr. Seuss to each student from preschool through eighth grade. It was a wonderful way to acknowledge the author who has made so many children smile and laugh with his incredible imagination.
