By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer Walk into the Western Art Show & Sale this week at the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale at the Tehama District Fairground, and one is met with about 125 pieces from artists near and far. Pieces at the 4th exhibit, art show manager Jane Daugherty said, are curated by a team of expert judges and displayed with the help of the Red Bluff Art Association. Works include paintings, photography, sculptures and more from artists as far as West Virginia and as close as Tehama and Shasta counties. "Agriculture is the backbone of Tehama County," Daugherty said. "And having original fine art to present the general public is important because it helps grow our industry." The art show and sale is scheduled to run from noon to 7 p.m. today; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. A wine and cheese tasting session is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, when showgoers can also get a chance to mingle with artists. Kathy Brehm, president of the Red Bluff Art Association, said local artist Suzanne Bears has work at the exhibit, in addition to several works from artists in the North Valley Art League in Redding. The pieces, Daugherty said, can range in cost from $500 to $8,000. Red Bluff Art Association member and artist Connie Maxey on Tuesday walked through a work by artist Mia DeLode of Montana. The piece, a portrait of a mule, exemplifies the technical proficiency of the artist, Maxey said. "There's people who are going to walk through here who raise mules and drive mules and they're going to know the accura- cy," she said, adding that details such as a reflection in the mule's eye, the bridlework and silverwork are all complemented by a pinkish background that allows the portrait to pop. "I mean, who loves mules? But you gotta love that," Maxey said with a laugh. Daugherty said the art show is a welcome addition to the Bull & Gelding Show, especially to those who may not have cattle. The show's major sponsor is Western Horseman Magazine, and has received help from Tehama County CattleWomen as well.
