Tuesday, January 18, 2011 – Daily News – 5A ‘‘He was deeply hurt in his soul after the earth- quake,’’ Sterlin said. ‘‘He wanted to come back to see how is the actual Haitian sit- uation of the people and the country.’’ Duvalier — who assumed power in 1971 at age 19 following the death of his father, Francois ‘‘Papa Doc’’ Duvalier — still has some support in Haiti and millions are too young to remember life under his dic- tatorship. But his abrupt return Sunday still sent shock waves through the country, with some fearing that his presence will bring back the extreme polariza- tion, and political violence, of the past. R. Sargent Shriver, in critical condition BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Former Peace Corps director and vice-presiden- tial nominee R. Sargent Shriver was in critical condi- tion Monday morning at a hospital in Maryland, a spokeswoman for the family said. The 95-year-old was admitted at Suburban Hos- pital in Bethesda on Sunday, the family said in an e-mail statement attributed to spokeswoman Kirsten Seckler. No other details about his ailment were released. Shriver announced in 2003 that he had Alzheimer’s dis- ease. He served as the first Peace Corps director in the administration of his broth- er-in-law, President John F. Kennedy. He also was Democrat George McGov- ern’s running mate in 1972. Shriver’s wife and Spe- cial Olympics Founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver died in 2009 at age 88. A federal grand jury in Raleigh, N.C., is sifting records and testimony involving several political organizations and individu- als connected to Edwards to determine if the former North Carolina senator and 2004 vice presidential nom- inee broke any laws. A recently issued subpoena focuses on a web of these Edwards-affiliated groups, according to subpoena details provided to the AP that offer a glimpse behind the closed doors of the investigation. The case largely stems from money spent to keep Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter, in hiding along with former campaign aide Andrew Young, who initial- ly claimed paternity so Edwards could continue pursuing the White House without the taint of the affair. Investigators are looking chiefly at whether funds paid to Hunter and Young — from outside political groups and Edwards’ politi- cal donors — should have been considered campaign donations since they arguably aided his presiden- tial bid, according to several people involved in the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing probe. They’re also looking closely at whether any entities linked to Linda M. Fourby, LUTCF Your Red Bluff Agent WORLD BRIEFING the United States. Edwards operated illegally. While it could not be learned if prosecutors have found violations of a specif- ic statute, federal election laws require disclosure of the money spent on cam- paigns for federal offices, limit the amounts of such donations and prohibit the conversion of campaign funds to personal use. Goldman Sachs bans US investors from Facebook offer NEW YORK (AP) — Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has prohibited U.S. investors from participating in a private offering expect- ed to raise up to $1.5 billion for social networking site Facebook, citing wide- spread media coverage that could run afoul of securities guidelines. The investment bank said Monday it decided to restrict the fund to prospective shareholders in Asia and Europe because it deter- mined that the news cover- age could be inconsistent with the laws that govern private placements. In a statement, Goldman Sachs said it made the deci- sion on its own and ‘‘believes this is the most prudent path to take.’’ Although Goldman Sachs did not specify which laws it was concerned about, the Securities and Exchange Commission has guidelines that regulate the amount of solicitation and publicity that is allowed in connection with a private placement. The development comes after Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor invested $500 million in the privately held social networking site earlier this month. Swiss banking giant UBS AG said Monday it is revising its 44-page dress code telling its Swiss staff how to present themselves, which generated worldwide ridicule for its microman- agement of their dressing and dining habits. The code instructs employees on everything from their breath — no gar- lic or onions, please — to their underwear, which should be skin-colored. ‘‘We’re reviewing what is important to us,’’ UBS spokesman Andreas Kern told The Associated Press. He said the bank would issue a pared-down booklet with more general guide- lines on how to impress cus- tomers with a polished pres- ence and sense of Swiss pre- cision and decorum. Obama to honor China’s president with state dinner WASHINGTON (AP) — When Hu Jintao makes what is likely his final trip to Washington as China’s pres- ident, he will get an honor he desperately wanted but was denied during his first visit nearly five years ago: a White House state dinner. Symbolism and protocol are very important to the Chinese and the opulence of Wednesday’s black-tie affair with President Barack Obama should be plenty sat- isfying for Hu, a 67-year-old hydroelectric engineer who has ruled the country since 2002. That could help rela- tions between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies. A grand soiree is in the works, but big ques- tions remain. Will a celebri- ty chef do the cooking? Will first lady Michelle Obama’s gown have an Oriental flair? Will the Obamas try to turn Hu on to American pop cul- ture with the entertainment? The White House has yet to release any details. But Mrs. Obama, White House social secretary Julianna Smoot and other staffers deeply immersed in pulling off the administration’s third state dinner hope to avoid repeat- ing the slights, both per- ceived and real, that marred Hu’s reception for an April 2006 summit. For starters, Hu was unhappy that Presi- dent George W. Bush opted for lunch over a state dinner. Bush held few state din- ners as president, preferring workman-like visits with foreign leaders over eating meals in a tuxedo. He also was sensitive to concerns in the U.S. about human rights in China and was reluctant to be seen as going all out for Hu with a state dinner. Hu was welcomed with a pomp-filled arrival ceremo- ny on the South Lawn, including a military honor guard and a 21-gun salute. But the reception was spoiled when a woman protesting China’s treatment of the banned Falun Gong religious movement began shouting during his remarks. Bush personally apolo- gized after they had retreat- ed to the Oval Office. During the ceremony, a White House announcer flubbed China’s formal name by calling it the “Republic of China.” “Bread is our Specialty” Milling Wheat into Flour Made with Organic & Local Ingredients 446 Antelope Blvd. #38 Left side of Antelope Holiday Mkt 529-1687 COMFORT SERVICE INC.
